laurelinwyntre - did you copy and paste that from the Weltfunk forums? Someone posted almost the exact points a long time ago over there. Anyway.... Interestingly, "Worlds of Exile and Illusion" involves telepathic communication. How ironic. Although I don't think anyone other than a few people I know, see what I see in the song Ilusion... |

oh...Optimus6128... I do think the "please don't go, I want you to stay" is referring to leaving *this* physical reality (which is illusion) in some other way, not suicide. I'm glad you came to consider this in your interpretation...I really like your insight posted here. I think you are very close to the true meaning... |

laurelinwyntre - that is EXACTLY what I think is meant by the 'illusion' in this song. I still think the second verse is the key to this song. I don't think the person in the song wants to withdraw from reality. I think they experience reality in a different way than most people, and live in a reality that is different from most people - which makes them feel out of place just about everywhere they go. I don't mean another reality, as in some kind of delusional level, but more on a different spiritual level than the one most of us are used to Apparently Ronan relates to this person, as in 'to us the world is different, as we are to the world'. I think the person in this song was at a very desperate time in their life where there was really no one who could understand what they were going through, so this was his way of comforting them, as best as he could, while at the same time, making the lyrics so that other listeners could relate to them. |

to Sciboy... I agree with some of what you are saying, I don't think the song is saying to 'forget' your past, but to not let it control you. It is true, everything we have been through individually in our lives makes us who we are, but holding on to the past and letting it control us keeps us from moving forward. That goes for humans individually and as a whole/race. |

from The Top 10 Steps Toward Spiritual Growth. Diana Robinson, Ph.D., Personal & Spirituality Coach Dump your baggage. We must unload our baggage, our beloved belongings, our sources of victimhood, our hurts, our perpetrators, our righteous wrath. We must unhook ourselves and be prepared to leave them all behind. The Wheel of Transformation: Karlfried Graf Durckheim's method of spiritual awakening Durckheim warns us that this practice must be done continuously with concentrated awareness or it will lead nowhere. Stage 1-- all that is contrary to essential being must be relinquished. step 1: the practice of critical watchfulness step 2: the letting go of all that stands in the way of new becoming Stage 2-- that which has been relinquished must be dissolved in transcendent Being which absorbs and recreates us. step 3: union with transcendent Being. 6th chakra: 3rd Eye: psychic POWER, spirit ENERGIES, higher intuition, light. |

| this is the epitome of the darkness that we are capable of...the last line is the 'light at the end of the tunnel'..."in us also lies the capacity to transcend". We are capable of murdering eachother, destroying ourselves and our environment, yet at the same time, capable of endless possibilities that can benefit us as individuals and as a whole. The question is when do we decide which direction is right? I love this song. | |

This is where I saw this comment! I was thinking about what you said today, and couldn't remember who said it. I love the line too, I was pondering it today and it made a lot of sense to me. I'd also like to say, I am very sorry I get so deep everywhere I go...I say like the same shit about every song. I look at a pile of dog crap on the ground and think it's about spiritual evolution. I guess it's just in the back of my mind 24/7 :/ |

| VNV Nation – Carry You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| wow, I just realized, this is exactly what I went through 5 years ago. I wish I could get into detail. I need to write a book, except it won't be fiction. To be short, for me, when the light has touched your mind the first time, all the darkness built up inside surfaces, and you need to deal with it, and get over it all, until that light can consume you and you can share it with others. | |
| VNV Nation – Carry You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| see my Farthest Star comment, so I don't have to say it all over again...these are the most spiritual, most straight-up lyrics from VNV...the words are in your face this time, not much to "interpret" in my opinion. | |
| VNV Nation – The Farthest Star Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Yes, 'fear' is what holds us back from realizing what we are capable of, in ways that benefit our existence (physically and spiritually) rather than destroy it. Because we are taught that certain things are not possible, when they are. And even when those possibilities are in your face, it takes time to get over that fear, and realize that you have the power within you too. Once one person has experienced this, they can show the next person, who will show the next person... This could get all deep, beware my Judgement comments. |

What does this song mean to me? It means everything to me. Since the very first time, the very first second I heard the first line the first time I heard the snippet, I felt attached to this song, every word (especially the second verse), and I can't stop listening to it. It's not a 'sad' song, it's a comforting song, and it has the most personal meaning to me out of all other VNV songs. I can't wait to hear/see it live. Tell Ronan to bring a mop, to clean up my tears. :) |

by the way... this song is keeping me sane once again. that little story i told up there? the original incident that drove me out of my mind, well the person behind that now lives like 2 minutes walk from my house, so it's a little hard going through the day not remembering the chaos that was going on back then. when it starts running thru my head, the chorus of this song starts going...."nothing i can do, that i have not done. no words i can say, no truth left that i can see..." man the whole thing. if you had any idea how intense and unbelievable that experience was, you'd be trying not to lose your mind as well. read these words as if they were my soul at all times!!! btw, when i am finally with this person i am referring to (no, not Ronan lol) i will post here and confess that i may no longer need the song to keep me sane, because i will have my love right with me. ps) he's superhuman like me *lol* stfu |

it's boring and difficult for me to think only of it being about some historic event. i like to hear people's personal/emotional interpretations of VNV's songs more often rather than what may be some literal interpretation. VNV's songs are for humans who have emotions, not elite scholars. |

i've had many many ideas come to me thinking of this song. it *is* actually my favorite song ever by VNV. i have one vision with it - without getting all into detail - my apocolyptic side of me likes to think of it being about the 3rd world war and the period it is all 'supposed' to start taking place is in this century - close to the time of 2012 which as said above, is thought to be the 'end' of the Mayan calendar, as well as a significant year noted in other ancient cultures. i think this period of time will be taken advantage of to completely throw religion against religion, man against man, man against earth - man against himself, all in the name of greed and to determine which country, leader, or group of people will dominate in the end. OK! now for my less 'end of the world' theory - it reminds me of right now and how i feel about the US/Iraq war - based on lies, greed, deception - in the name of freedom, completely insulting our troops' courage to be in the miliatary and denegrating their honour. they have been sent on a mission that is completely unnecessary and dying for no reason. (that of course is not what this is about, it was written wayyyy before the Iraq war, just another one of my relations to it) ok, and the 3rd is simple: I HATE WAR. ok, done now. |

I'm kinda there with MrMarouka. this is definately one of my favorite songs next to Honour and Perpetual. i always saw it as a contemplation as to why we have so much left to do and learn and discover. it seems like we are so far behind from where we should be. my favorite line has always been 'even lands we once called home lie undiscovered and unknown' - i could be taking it too literally but i seriously do wonder wtf we are doing out fighting unjustified wars, destroying our own planet and eachother instead of exploring the potential endless possibilities of being human and learning all there is to know about the universe we live in. we seem to be stuck (most of us anyway) and not moving forward or evolving as you would think we should be as a whole. whewwww sorry about that.... |

| VNV Nation – Arena Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| to me it feels like an appreciation of life and being alive - and looking forward instead of backward. | |
| VNV Nation – Rubicon Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i like Czar5000's explanation - i think 'technically' it might stem from that. for me personally it helps me stay sane, literally. there was a period in my life about 4 years ago when some really strange things happened (nothing abusive or harmful, it was actually very spiritual and life changing) to me but at the time i was in the typical state of human mind so the things i saw, felt, witnessed seriously did traumatize me to the point i was almost completely insane. i didn't know if i could ever go back - to get the chaos out of my mind and having each thing that happened play over and over in my head. i can't really get into it, but someone pretty much saw into my soul and i felt violated in a sense, and ended up analyzing every element of myself, my past, my life, my future...I was literally a mess. anyway, with the help of some things i finally did return to 'sanity' or 'normalcy'. at that point instead of feeling chaotic, i was calm and my entire view on life was changed forever. well, here i am some years later in a simlar situation and this song has helped me very much to stay here - without going back to the state of mind i was in the last time. as much good as it did in the long run, that state of mind was pure hell, chaos, confusion, and fear. i don't ever want to be that way again. if it weren't for this song, i might be back there now. i canNOT return.... | |

I completely agree with everything ^ Mark just said. (except i don't recommend slitting any wrists) |

| VNV Nation – Perpetual Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
he also always said it was up to each person whether or not they wanted to actually listen and understand them (lyrics) - that was always my favorite part :) I still stand mostly by my original interpretation, but I think it is even more simplistic than what I described above. Basically, just find the strength within you and realize that you are the light, the hope, and the guide to your own life. |
|
| VNV Nation – Endless Skies Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i think you have the right idea but from the wrong perspective - it's more speaking to those who DO continue to dwell on the past and not appreciate the moment that is happening now. it's a positive song, a positive outlook. | |
| VNV Nation – Perpetual Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i maybe shouldn't have said it like that........i dont' mean light beings as in your stereotypical 'new age' kind of light beings, i mean as in hope, as in oneness, etc, ......don't take everything i say literally. | |
| VNV Nation – Chrome Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
\"This song is about people who hide behind what they want people to believe about them, melding their visible life to fit in. \'Chrome disguise/million faces, million lies\'\" I agree with you. i would also like to add that I think it is about the fact that too many people are consumed with the physical, material world and refuse to see anything beyond. Another thing, \"if i could change your mind, i wouldn\'t save you from the path you wander\". - it\'s like you\'re looking at another person and seeing them in the same position you were some time ago and wishing they could change for the better, but knowing from your own experience that the only way for them to change is by their own choice and power. In desperation, dreams and this soul can set you free.... |
|
| VNV Nation – Perpetual Lyrics | 20 years ago |

(After concentric circles line, it should be \"But you have always known, this is not all there is\"). I should say now, I almost always interpret things spiritually. I guess I take the words and make them my own. I usually write novels when I post so I\'ll keep it short :) But ok - to ME - it\'s about looking beyond the physical - beyond what is in front of your eyes and also within yourself - and realizing that the questions we seek answers to will not be found \'outside\', but inside. Through the storm fronts....throughout all the chaos we endure here on this plane - we will return to the form we arrived from - light beings that are eternal - always were and always will be. |
|
| VNV Nation – Endless Skies Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| What this song means to ME - it is the way I live, or at least try to, as often as I can. To me it is about letting yourself live in the moment, even the simplest ones, and enjoying every aspect of it you possibly can, while it lasts. Also, not allowing the everyday stresses to get to you - solely feeling the joy and beauty of being alive. Live seconds as a lifetime, time it does not matter. Nope, sure doesn\'t. Time is an illusion, it\'s just numbers, all in our head. Forget it all :) | |
| 311 – Bomb The Town Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| well, it sounds to me like S.A. is talking about some kinda of transformation from this phase of our minds as humans into the next phase, what some call 'enlightenment', whatever word you want to use. i'll go into more detail next time i'm drunk. | |
