Descent Lyrics
All God's children would have cause
to think the Devil now walks this realm
A place dispossessed of any sanity
Edification of a scene from Hell
Manmade prophecies serve to vindicate
All sides who claim themselves
worthy servants obedient to the same God
A God who commands them not to kill
These faithful in lines that number thousands
bring perdition throughout the land
As though the angel of deah himself had been unleashed
to exact a punishment upon this world
Across this cursed place rage the fires
Where the innocent are burned on a thousand funeral pyres
In anguish parted from this world
Does the need for the belief in the Devil
Serve to palliate and forgive our sins
In the abandonment of reason and delivery unto Hell
Limitless are the ways of mankind in it's virulent capacities
Ironic it may seem, through this a chance exists to see
In us also lies the capacity to transcend
to think the Devil now walks this realm
A place dispossessed of any sanity
Edification of a scene from Hell
All sides who claim themselves
worthy servants obedient to the same God
A God who commands them not to kill
bring perdition throughout the land
As though the angel of deah himself had been unleashed
to exact a punishment upon this world
Where the innocent are burned on a thousand funeral pyres
In anguish parted from this world
Serve to palliate and forgive our sins
In the abandonment of reason and delivery unto Hell
Ironic it may seem, through this a chance exists to see
In us also lies the capacity to transcend

this is the epitome of the darkness that we are capable of...the last line is the 'light at the end of the tunnel'..."in us also lies the capacity to transcend". We are capable of murdering eachother, destroying ourselves and our environment, yet at the same time, capable of endless possibilities that can benefit us as individuals and as a whole. The question is when do we decide which direction is right? I love this song.
VNV NATION "SONG MEANINGS" INSIDE 15 page interview with Ronan Harris.

For me, the song is saying that people blame their careless actions on the devil instead of taking the blame themselves, that the idea of the devil is just another scapegoat for human error.
This song kind of sumarizes what I think of when I think of VNV nation. The music is different from their normal stuff, but the lyrics sum it up: humans are inherently inclined to do bad rather than good, and the truly good admit to their evils while trying to do good.
This song makes me shiver. As faye said it pretty much sums up the evil in humanity...but also the potential for good, if only we were to exercise that potential.
