fun song. a few others have said things that i agree with and i would like to add my own thoughts. sounds like the singer is describing their place in life. a transitional period in their life between carefree youth and responsible human. I need to know who I am and what I'm going to do while I'm on earth -premise of the whole song I need to understand everything and everybody's lives -having a look around and see what everyone else is doing with themselves. the singer is trying to figure others out so that they may compare themselves and establish their place in life. I need to get up tomorrow I have to mail that letter and pay that bill -carefree youth would have been hungover or lazy and stayed in bed without effort towards anything but surviving. now they are getting up and completing tasks. deadlines, deadlines, deadlines write that essay, and pray on the windowsill -reveals how they feel about doing this bit. always a deadline to beat. their age is revealed by their deadlines tend to be completing essays. this shows they are in school. praying on the the window sill is the blind hope that you pull it all off. lines, lines jump from line to line just one, do one at a time -the hectic threads you have to maintain to sustain a well adjusted life. this one's all about mine mine mine -realizing they have to be selfish to make it all happen and feeling kinda low about it. solve one try then keep on trying i'm sculpting my philosophy -works through one problem only to get to another. its maddening. once he establishes his philosophy it appears to be immediately challenged and needs to be modified. in patterns going 1,2,3 -the step process to modifying his philosophy. I need to learn I need to grow I want to know. No no no no no no no no -sounds like he is having thoughts of buying into this, if only somewhat. learning, growing, spending time to develop and hone skills. something somewhat foreign to him if only because it is new. these thoughts of personal development conflict with his past self and simply wants to deny these crazy new thoughts I need nice hair� no women Nice hair, then women. so i am the first to really take a crack at this one. sweet. i have so many fun or crazy ideas about this song. none of which i think really hold true cause i didn't write this song. Here goes... "Cats and crafts put you in a tiny box that's filled with our victims" This is how he sees someone. I'd venture to say that it is a girl. And he is likening her to a young, innocent, naive, little girl - with little pink bows in her hair and having a jewelry box with that ballerina that pops out of the top with music playing. She is that stupid ballerina. The end of that line "victims" alludes to all the others just like her, girls and guys alike, all the same age, all acting rather trapt in a rather silly reality. "who can't explain how they love their moms" Oedipus complex joke here. kinda funny really. a wiki paste about Oedipus : The Oedipus complex in Freudian psychoanalysis refers to a stage of psychosexual development in childhood where children of both sexes regard their father as an adversary and competitor for the exclusive love of their mother. The name derives from the Greek myth of Oedipus, who unknowingly kills his father, Laius, and marries his mother, Jocasta. so basically all dudes are fucked in the head being in love with their mom and how they struggle with the transference into the girls they meet. "tries to seize what their hearts have lost" now, my feelings about this part is that it becomes a lil corny. still well done. then again i may have missed the mark. a former love? they broke up, but they were in love for a reason, whatever the reason. and it was a pretty good thing. seize is a key word. how do you seize something that you know is gone with a girl? you pull some tricks, hint about the good times, you both eat it up and, bam. you find that sexual energy from long ago that made things so special. then again i could be putting my crazy thoughts of sexual perversion with my mom into this. "my best friend took me in and made me down decide my own sins" i am unsure of the accuracy of interpretation of this part. i welcome other ideas here for i am sure this part is better understood by others than myself. mine is rather simple... a friend took him aside and sat him down. they had a long talk about decisions he is making. about his previous rekindlement. and he responds "can you please forgive the love?" could be poking fun at the horrible mess he is in. it explains why he keeps getting mixed up with her to the disbelief of his friends. now, admittingly the interpretation of the chorus is subjective. i do not claim to have interpreted the true meaning, but since i get to write this and share it, i am going to assume you want to hear it. even if it is wrong. it could be said that it is beautifully innocent. it a world of sickening things and people, and the trends that are sent in socializing from them, that she is too beautiful to fuck. but the use of the work fuck defiantly shatters that idea. its a black listed word in a sentence of innocent white. (fuck off about any race parallels here) i find that the chorus is just saying that he sees more to her than that. that its a bit deeper than just sex. to just fuck her from looks. she is much too special than conquest. over all a song with a bit of complexity with a straight forward subject of a girl and guy in distress. ok, im done spinning lies. lates. |

i agree its about sex, but I do feel that there is more than just the act of sex here. It appears that she is looking for a way back into a previous relationship and the comfortability that comes with it. The sex is great and wants a piece of it again because of how simple and real their relationship once was. Afterwords, there are pangs of regret. maybe not. maybe she is realizing its really over or it will not be like she wanted it to be to begin with. Kerouac lived a troubled life, esp from mid life to the end. I know while living in Florida he lived in an extremely small room built on the back of cracker house (initially for GI's returning from war). the photos of him living there are in black and white (i believe it made the cover of a magazine or two :) and his eyes are deep, coal black. the room is surrounded by little notebooks of notes that he condenses into a typewriter. he also loved to sleep out doors and note the night skys. if blake didn't use Kerouac's life to liken it to his own, then he leads a pretty remarkably similar lifestyle or feeling of sentiments. JK was also a known and popularized american buddist, in a sense... i figure that might relate to the whole levitating thing. |

The last lines are of epic perportions. "Your voice like the sound of sirens to a house on fire You're saving me" The pause after 'sirens' proves Skiba's genious. In the classic, The Odiseey, Sirens were inchanting voices that attracted sailors to their deaths. Here, Skiba alludes to that with the pause, but with a role reversal. He still is the 'enchanted sailor' but he is the house on fire. He is already doomed- a common theme within the lyrics of ALK3. But when skiba turns it to a refrence to fire trucks sounding in the distance, on their way to save the house-him- makes this song an epic, and yet somewhat tragic love song.
