Lenny Kravitz – Again Lyrics 16 years ago
This girl I'm falling for is leaving the country in a month. For good. It doesn't help that she's quite possibly be my soul-mate.

If there was one song that could perfectly describe my life right now, it would be this song.

Is it considered a mixed-CD if you only burn one song?

Nick Drake – Black Eyed Dog Lyrics 18 years ago
From The Penguin Dictionary of Symbols:

"Having been man's companion in the light of living day, the dog becomes his guide through the darkness of death."

So yes, this song is about death. Not necessarily suicide. And quite possibly not about depression.

Elliott Smith – Alphabet Town Lyrics 18 years ago
i agree most with the first commenter. it makes sense the most that this song really is about all the times that he spent in alphabet city.

whats really amazing about this song, is this vibe/tone of decadence and self-loathing in his voice as he sings about his nights out in 'this alphabet town'. i really dont think you need to read between the lines too much.

Bob Dylan – Shelter from the Storm Lyrics 19 years ago
this song plays out as a story; he was lost at first - then he found her; then something happened and they fell apart. conventional break-up song.

but as a dylan song would go, it's so much more layered than the surface would give off. 'she' is a metaphor for love, 'storm' is a metaphor for the bitterness and solitude.

at the bottom of it all, it's really about the illusion of love. that even if love can 'give you shelter from the storm', it doesn't mean that the storm is gone no?

and that's how i imagine this song was made; when his shelter was gone.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – The Dead Flag Blues Lyrics 19 years ago
what struck a poignant chord with me in this song was the last two lines which really indicated the song's capitalistic theme. but not only do i believe this song is about the consequences of capitalism, i belive it's about the repercussions of democracy as well. but it's all arbitrary, so hey - we're "all right" :P oh. and i do think this song is narrated in a non-linear fashion.

(i'm gonna just refer to the song in 'bit's. i'll copy/paste the 'bits' below.)

(first bit: "the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel" to "and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles")

i think this 'bit' is the 'bit' on the consequences of capitalism. the darkside/aftermath of capitalism can being miscontrued (or used). the most obvious line that portrays the capitalism theme is the line "and the billboards are all leering". billboards = advertising. advertising is mainly used for two things; to sell a product and to sell an idea. what being sold in the billboards in this song is both a product and an idea = capitalism.

(the second 'bit': "it went like this: " to "everything washed in a thin orange haze ")

this bit refers to the repercussions of democracy. how impinging democracy upon others (think "the domino theory") would devastate peoples' lifes and cause wars etc. i think the imagery here is very evocative of war. (or could be evocative of an uprising [perhaps against democracy?]).

(the last bit: "i said: "kiss me, you're beautiful -" to "and it's full of blood")

this bit more or less seems a little bit more vague, but i'm inclined to believe that this bit is about a revolution. though it has obvious romantic undertones, i do think it is capitalism that narrator is referring to in the first line "kiss me, you're beautiful". he only realizes the horrors of capitalism (which he describes in the prior bits - i really think the entire narration is in an non-linear fashion, reiterating) after he realizes he falls into "the valley of death" and to wake up with a wallet full of blood. wallet has obvious metaphorical/symbolic relations to capitalism. and blood? the blood of many innocent lives caused by the proponents of democracy (and capitalism).

the sound of an arriving train could symbolize the arriving of a revolution. then the strings bit could detail the heroic rise of an opposing economical/political system. as someone mentioned, GY!BE are anarchists, so i'm inclined to believe that it is anarchy being detailed in a slow, solemn like manner. but the last two minutes depict a carefree, singsong mood - evocative of a society that's free. the manner and tune is almost folksy, which could be an implication of the aforementioned carefree attitude and freedom. freedom from an existing government. the folksy tune bring to mind imagery of a collective group of autonomous individuals celebrating something. i.e, like gypsies celebrating their non-allegiance/freedom from any form of higher authority.

sorry for the long 'opinion'. i apologize for typos as well. :P

13th Floor Elevators – You're Gonna Miss Me Lyrics 19 years ago
i think the lyrics are self-explanatory, seems to be rather anthemic. very raw. an awesome opening track to "The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators" anyhow.

unbelievable that no one has commented on this gem.

Ride – Vapour Trail Lyrics 19 years ago
i have this imagery of a beautiful 'deep blue sky' day with the song's persona sitting down (or riding in a car, down the freeway) as he/she ruminates about his/her relationship with the object of the song.

but in essence, i really think this song is a beautiful piece on the transient aspect of love. the seemingly (bitter)sweet melancholy illuminates the pure bliss that one feels when listening to this song. i honestly love this song.

and i have to buy this book everyone seems to be talking about here.

My Bloody Valentine – Loomer Lyrics 19 years ago
psychocandy doesn't really strike me as being typically shoegaze, but i think a lot of people would've listened to psychocandy before loveless - seeing how the mary chain started it all as rubyoverdiamonds has mentioned.

at least in my case i heard of the chain before MBV. =)

Iron & Wine – Promising Light Lyrics 19 years ago
he sings his ruminations of this great love which he regrets taking granted for. all the things he did and the begging/pleading; all which he seems to be looking at in retrospect and still longing for the girl.

'promising light on the sidewalk girls', imo, really means promising the truth on all those 'sidewalk girls' which he probably had some relation with.

light symbolizes the truth. i.e, 'shedding some light on that mysterious case'

AFI – Girl's Not Grey Lyrics 19 years ago
Mainstream or not, I believe this is song is a true gem amongst the AFI’s works. Havok really has created a sort of ethereal imagery in this song, so much so that there seems to be something esoteric about this song. I love the manifestation of imagery in the video, complimenting each other with pinpoint precision. This is one radio-friendly song I’m not ashamed to admit is good.

And to a certain pretentious previous commenter above, it is people like you which causes a very distinct polarization amongst peoples' music tastes; this self-proclaimed good music you listen to against the 'garbage' that us oh-so-mere-and-earthly listeners have to bear. I hope it comes to a point that you realize you're really just fueling your own self-percieved lofty ‘musical elitist’ status. Who are you to judge what good or bad music is? Obviously not you, seeing as your uninformed juvenile ranting that he “is singing completely out of key” at the end of the song proves you can’t even identify a simple octave transposition.

it' just a pure, simple love song whereby the protaganist just proclaims his love for his girl. think about it - would he consider his love for his girl as 'strange' or 'abusive'?

love is love. period. u can't judge someone elses love for a person.

Good Charlotte – I Just Wanna Live Lyrics 20 years ago
I like to think that the chorus was ripped off Boston's 'More than a feeling'; afterall, it's widely regarded 'Smells like teen spirit' was also ripped off said song.

This song bores me to death anyway. So do Good Charlotte. How can guys in make-up be funny? Mimes aren't. I feel like kicking them in the balls whenever they try to pull some mime-shit on me. I think the same should go for Good Charlotte when they try some 'punk'-shit on you.

My Bloody Valentine – Sometimes Lyrics 20 years ago
'Close my eyes, Feel me now, I don't know how you could not love me now' - I immediately fell for this song when I heard these first few lines. I still think the song lyrics are very cryptic nevertheless; afterall, you can barely discern what he's trying to say at some points of the song.

I'm sure it's the melody driven by Shields' vocals that drives the song, apart from the thick heavy distortion in the background. Someone once commented that listening to this song was like "being bathed in golden lights" and it just feels like that. You can't help but feel the song flowing through you.

And I agree, Coppola was a genius in using this song
. 'Sometimes' always brings up such vivid imagery of the Scarlett Johansson (:P) and Tokyo at night. Gorgeous visuals.

I believe the song can't be listened to; it has to be felt - as corny as it sounds.

Led Zeppelin – Heartbreaker Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think 'Annie' is as much of a prostitute as the common belief goes. I think she's just a femme fatale who can get anything or any guy she wants; something like fartonme said, 'a woman who has a lot to offer'.

Anyway, especially when played live, the opening riff owned(s). Page is a wizard. The solo is great too, though, undeniably, uncomparable to Hendrix.

Simple Plan – Welcome to My Life Lyrics 20 years ago
Man, the marketing behind Simple Plan is pure genius. I mean, how CAN you get a five guys in their mid-late 20's to mass produce 'teenage angst' songs for 13 year olds?

And, amongst other things, the lyrics in the song are so proverbially cliche. As a matter of fact; Yes, everyone knows how its like to be hurt; Yes, everyone knows how its like to be lost; Yes, everyone knows how its like to be left out in the dark. And yes, I know "what it's like", thank you very much. Whatever 'it' is ...

Simple Plan undermines the average person's intellect. They take it for granted that we "don't know how it's like" and only they do. Whatever. I'd rather someone listen to something else that's less ridiculous. Grown men writing and playing angsty songs for teenagers? Haha. I still can't believe they actually pulled it off.

Nirvana – Aneurysm Lyrics 20 years ago
Though I have to agree that this song is about heroin, you can't deny the Tobi Vail references in this song. I suppose 'Heavier than heaven' has been thorougly research, so I guess the Tobi Vail references are valid.

This song rocks anyway; definitely best played live. Really attests to Cobain's abilities as a songwriter; emotive brevity in his lyrics, which only he can wail good. Definitely my favorite Nirvana song.

Oh, and Grohl owns with the drumming.

Frou Frou – Let Go Lyrics 20 years ago
Highlighting society's rapidly burgeoning emotional void, 'Let go' really is all about letting go; letting go of everything that the hectic pace of our lives in this world entraps us in; letting go and just 'jump in' without thinking too much; letting go and being what we are - human. We're all to caught with perfection and false pretenses that we forget that it is only human to make mistakes.

Afterall, as said before, emotion is the core of humanity, therefore, the 'beauty in the breakdown' really is beautiful; just breaking down and letting go of everything for once and being human.

Massive Attack – Angel Lyrics 20 years ago
I believe this song depicts the perilous effects of lust; how the persona is completely dangerously enraptured by a certain 'angel' with devious intentions.
Eyes are normally indicative of a person's intentions, therefore, the line 'Her eyes, She's on the dark side' indicates her malciious intent. I suppose 'Neutralize, Every man in sight' really means how every man is easily taken into her seduction.
Destructive lust is the main theme here; the music doesn't say otherwise.
