I had originally thought this song was about the American Underground "Railroad" that African slaves used to escape slavery, but I now see that it makes more sense as a song about draft dodging. |

I think the main aspects of this song are seclusion, loneliness and lament. It's obvious that he's been away for a while, and once he got home he shut himself off from the world, not wanting contact of any kind with anyone. He's in a state of mourning, not so much about his present condition, but more of a nostalgic desire to live again in times that have since gone by. He thinks that because he's survived and gone on with his life that he can return to that which he misses so fervently. However, the "radio" is taunting him, offering both criticism and praise, comfort and pain. |

I think that the phrase "Morning Theft" refers to leaving in the morning after a one-night-stand. Metaphorically speaking that is. The "Morning Theft" is him asking if the time they spent together was wasted or stolen by him since he had to break it off. He's feeling extremely guilty about it. |

I think WilliamTheProtector is spot on. This song seems to be about the "fickle fascination of an everlasting God" saying that the commonly conceived idea of God being an old man sitting on a throne in heaven is rubbish. God is, and is in, everything. Hindu's call it "The Self" or "Brahman". Most major cultures at one point revolved around this idea, but over thousands of years, the original messages have been reinterpreted, misinterpreted and even flat out forgotten.
Billy is making a statement that he must get back to the original truth about God, and forget about all the vices, moral lapses, greed, selfishness, etc. in societies and cultures that have clouded and hidden this truth. |

After hearing the secret gig they played in Berlin, Billy says that he wrote this song while he was living with his dad when the band was in it's initial stages. Now, wether or not this song has anything to do with his dad is up to speculation. |

Like most of the other songs on the album, I think this one is possibly about drugs as well. He's saying that he was easily tempted by the drugs, they seemed to sparkle to him and he thought it would be a way to relieve his boredom, but was possibly more than he bargained for. |

It seems like it's denial. He's denying that he's addicted to drugs, most likely heroin. He's saying that it's not a part of him and he's pushing it away, but really, he's truly addicted. |

I think the whole album has some sort of concept pertaining to Jon's own life using biblical references. If you notice with Temptation, he's speaking about looking for love, but only finding evil temptations, much as Eve was tempted by the snake to eat the apple. Three Doors is a bit harder to interpret, maybe a statement of confusion in that he's trying to reach the truth about religion or God, but there are so many "doors" that he doesn't know which one is right or wrong. This song, The Nile's Edge, is about Jon's father abandoning him, and saying that it left him alone or empty or feeling like a part of himself was missing because of it. |

It seems like he's saying that he reached out in a time of need, but the girl/woman just took him for another regular Joe to sate her for the time being until the next one comes along. Then maybe, she realizes that he's different, but it's too late, and the damage has been done, and he doesn't care that he's breaking her heart by "saying goodbye" because she's already broken his. |

The music is really ambient and spacey, but heavy and mellow at the same time... but that holds true for most Hum songs, which is why I love them so much. |

I think wizzam hit it right on the head.
If a stereotypical "happy" person is walking around pretending to be happy, then they're not really happy. Happiness only comes at certain times, it's not always there, the normal state of being is neutral, not to be mistaken with "happy". |

Beautiful song. I can't begin to express my feelings for it. I think that you may be looking to deep for an interpretation, because what Billy's really trying to say that, no matter if it's a crush or if you're just sitting around inside on a rainy day, it's love:
"Love comes in colors I can't deny
All that matters is love, love, your love"
I think that funnily enough, he's trying to say that love is love, so stop thinking about it so much, so therefore, the interpretation of the song shouldn't be bickered over as a complicated matter, because the song ITSELF is saying that it's not that hard to comprehend. He's wondering about love, but realizes that he shouldn't think about it so much because over-analyzing leads to seperation of the body and the mind. That's a no-no. |

To me, it sounds like this song was written from the 1st person view AS Siva. Siva, being the god of destruction and rebirth, is in total chaos at all times. It seems as though Billy feels that he has become chaotic through the actions of someone who betrayed him and he's striking back, not for revenge, but more so for his own rebirth or enlightenment. |
