it's probably not about being born into the wrong sex, and it's definitely not about WWII.. watchtowers and spotlights are most likely symbolic of trying to escape from a maximum security prison. which is a metaphor for trying to break out of the walls society places upon you. (i want to raise my freak flag higher and higher.. and never be alone.) it's basically about wanting to go against the grain, to do your own thing, but remain free of persecution. |

there is no possible way this song (and many othe TMBG songs) can exist without some deeper meaning. it's a cool and fun and novelty song, but seriously. there's a lot of philosophical analysis behind this song for a reason: it's probably meant to be picked apart.
it doesn't matter what it's about though. art is subject to interpretation so you can think of this song any way you want. |

nope. it's a bit deeper... at least, i interpret it like this:
it's a commentary on the music industry, and how the media totally bastardizes anything good.
the chorus "i taught you how to cyclops rock, then you turn around and break my heart / waste my time / mess up my mind.." is saying how.. at a time, musicians were all about the rock, right? but then, something (let's say MTV, for argument's sake) just sells it out and rock becomes a corporate thing.
and thus, the scene is destroyed.. "gotta find a new place to hang out, cuz i'm tired of living in hell."
"all the children run away from me / gotta find new friends to hang with cuz you're all afraid of me" like.. the kids now don't appreciate real music, and people are afraid to like things that aren't shoved down their throat by the media.
the whole cyclops thing is a metaphor for doing your own thing, but also still ending up feeling like a freak -- alienation.
"There's a whole new generation waiting to be wrecked by you" basically sums it all up |

My girlfriend lives in Ottawa and we both go to College in North bay; after a week at her place during our spring break, she drove the whole way back home and then a week later this song came on my playlist and it made me think of that day and how the whole way home nothing mattered except that I was so happy to be with her |

I meant to also say, since he's using the ride as a metaphor for a relationship, perhaps "the squeaking of the steel has gotten worse"; represents that feeling or fear or paranoia or discomfort that you get when you start to question the state of the relationship.

he talks about the brain, the heart, etc. i thought 'ivory lines lead' meant that bones form a map leading around the body.

I think this song is actually about how in today's society, one will be shunned for having different characteristics than what should be considered the norm. Hence the line "Girlfriend took me to meet her dad / didn't like me because I looked so bad."...
Or even that people will react with suprise or even fear .. ("Her head exploded like a atom bomb.")
Also though, it reminds us that though we are all different, we have our own skills that can be used to get by and procure what we need. ("Open up a can of tomato juice.")
