Finger Eleven – Stay And Drown Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is one my favorite songs by Finger Eleven. To me, this song about a person who feels like everything in his life is fucked up. One of those people that think or say to themselves, "I'm so fucked up." In the beginning, to me, it sounds like he's with someone who doesn't really notice that he is hurting and needs help. And this is why he says, "Was I left alone? Where have you gone? Were you somewhere else just sleeping?" And, "If I wait to wake you I'll never ask you Would you take my hand?" I think is saying that if he waits for her to realize what he is going through he might be waiting forever and never ask her for help. As most have said before me, I think he is asking her if she loves him enough to stay by his side while he tries to work through his problems. The part that really gives me this impression is "My open eyes see everything But I'm passing all the days through a window pane And as the scene would change I'd stay the same." The person feels like the majority of the people he sees are living happily and don't hurt like is and he is feeling like the world is moving all around him but he can't move past what pains him. So he feels like he is standing still and looking at the world through a window and the only thing that doesn't change is how bad he hurts. Something I, and I am sure many people, can identify with.

Toby Keith – American Soldier Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm a soldier deployed to Afghanistan. The first time I heard this song it was played at a ceremony for a friend of mine that was lost on October 27th and I cried more than I can ever remember criying in my life. Now everytime I hear it I tear up. It also has alot of meaning to me cause everything it says is exactly how I feel. I'll leave this post with this qoute I found, I just can't remember who said it.

"We must never forget that freedom is never really free. It is the most costly thing in the world, and freedon is never paid in a lump sum. Installments come due in every generation. All any of us can do is offer the generations that follow a chance for freedom."

Tool – The Grudge Lyrics 19 years ago
To Prog_Rocker: I disagree with you. First off, why would they have posted suggested readings on their official site if they didn't want people to open up some of the books that these metaphors might have referenced from? Hmm... very curious. Just because most of the people here are reading and researching some of the metaphors used in Maynard's music doesn't not mean they are all tools. For them it may just be that what they read and interperet in the songs IS somehow making these songs personal to them.

This songs means alot to me too. It's means the same thing osubuckeye420 says means to the lead singer. I was listening to it the other day, and it stirred up all thoughts of the things I have done wrong and the things I should change. It's like he is singing about me, lol, except I am 23.

A Perfect Circle – The Package Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, you know... I have noticed this too. I think a lot of people have this image of Tool sitting around and tripping on acid or another mind altering drugs before recording, and that's why thier songs are so cryptic. And, I honestly believe that he has experimented, there is no doubt in my mind about that... but he obviously has never been an addict of anythings other than maybe alcohol... he has a love of wines. As for your interpretation. It's definitely a possilblity, and I had never thought of "Tricky" and "Clever" being street names. A very interesting view. That's what I love about this site, the wide range of thoughts and ideas. I think the only time I have ever openly, disagreed with anyone was about the songs "Pet/Counting Bodies...," where a few people believe that he is singing about, Devo, his son. I just think this is ridiculous. Anyway, keep thinking. Always be thinking and have fun.

A Perfect Circle – Weak And Powerless Lyrics 19 years ago
First off... in reference to Sooke's questions... this is a repost from The Package that I made. I really hope more people see this, in order to dispell any misconceptions. Where as I am sure that Maynard has experimented with drugs, many people do... I know I had my own, he is not an addict and never was. He is not this big druggy like many people believe. In an interview on Jan. 23, 2004 on MTV with Kurt Loder he makes this perfectly clear.

"Loder: The album title, Thirteenth Step, seems to be a reference to the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step rehab program."

"Keenan: I don't think the album is specifically for people who are going through recovery, although that metaphor is absolutely present. Many of the songs are sung from the perspectives of recovery: from the perspective of a person who is in denial about a loved one, and from the drug perspective itself — the perspective of a person who is starting to realize that there is an issue, and of a person who is ready to deal with it.

This was a very difficult task for me, because I don't know what [drug addiction] is like. I drew on the experiences of friends who have gone through recovery, and friends who will never go through recovery. Layne Staley, for example, who was an old friend."

He very clearly says that he doesn't "Know what it's like" So I just wanted to clear that up. Though he says in the unplugged acoustic version of The Outsider, he is not condemning people addicted to drugs but he most certainly does not advocate them.

And to Reality? This is not an attack on you, as I said, I experimented when I was younger with many drugs. But you sound young, I just hope that through all that you are doing in life you gain a little clarity and wisdom before it's too late.

A Perfect Circle – Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that these two songs, Pet and this one, were both generally political. But as I have said on many of the APC songs pages, that Maynard's song can always be taken in different ways, something that Maynard wants people to do. Think of what something means to you and use your own mind. So I do think that Pet also had a definite addiction theme as mentioned by sonne_mond, going along with the entire addiction theme of the album, but it was also DEFINITELY meant to have this second meaning as well. Now I don't necessarily believe that it was specifically about Bush. While yes, it does fit well for our time, the Bush administration, I think that it is really talking about corruption of those in power and to what lengths they will go to achieve what they want. Which would fit to this administration as well as those to come. I think it's more like a wake up call to the American people to think about who we are voting for.

And to Cynosure, you are entitled to your opinion but I have to disagree, I highly doubt this song was about Devo. As adament as Maynard is about freedom of speech, using ones mind, and thinking for themselves, I don't think he would want his son to stay "safe and ignorant" and "isolate" him from himself and protect him from a "voice of reason." Just cause he says son several times in the song does not mean that he is talking about his son. I mean, let's face it... Maynard's lyric are never THAT straightforward.

Tool – The Grudge Lyrics 19 years ago
I have always thought that this song had a meaning somewhat alongs the lines of what rog27 explained... but I always wondered about the part about the Scarlet Letterman, since I remember that in, I think it was The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter was an embroidered letter that the female had to were identifying her as an adulter. But thanks in part to Nasus, I put it all together... it's nice when things finally come together you. lol :)

A Perfect Circle – The Outsider Lyrics 19 years ago
Ok... everyone who knows a little about Maynard, be it with Tool or APC know that first and foremost... he wants you to have your own veiws, form your own opinions, take home from the songs what YOU get out of them and believe them to mean. Obviously, the songs he writes means one specific thing to him... but as we can see here... everyone looks at the world through different eyes.
"In a perfect world, people in general will hear the album, be inspired and do something extraordinary. I hope someone might use us as a backdrop for inspiration for some other activity they excel in. I'm not going to spoonfeed anybody and rob them of their own personal experiences. I read the interpretations of the lyrics that people send to [the Tool Web] page. They're way off. But that's fine
I really do have more faith in humanity than most people think I do. I get resentful and upset when people don't use their heads about stuff. It upsets me when people are selling themselves short and letting themselves down, whether it's education or information."
As for what this song means to Maynard. I wil post this quote again. During and acoustical session in NY on May 7, 2004 after joking about pee, Maynard says this about The Outsider,
"The Outsider. This is a, This is a strange... (Clears throught) strange song. Very difficult to explain what's going on with this song. Um... I can explain it, uh, I had a friend who had some, uh, some chemical problems and, uh, I ended up meeting his brother and his brother was so... out of touch with what his... what his brother was going through. Just didn't understand, he was like the kinda jock guy that's like, "Yeah, walk it off." You know, he just didn't understand the process that his brother was going through. So this song is kind of song from the perspective of the brother who doesn't understand what his loved one is going through and, uh, in a way is kind of, uh, insensitive and has no compassion for what this person is going through. As if they're having a choice in this moment about these chemical addictions and it's, uh, and any of you who have friends that are going through that you realize it's... it's just not that simple. It really isn't. So, this song's called The Outsider because, you know, that brother is basically standing on the outside of an understanding. Uh, he doesn't get it. So, uh, this is not a condemnation of people that are on drugs. This is sung from the perspective of someone who is ignorant and doesn't have the time or patience to understand what their loved one is going through."
THIS is a quote o his exact words as I transcribed it straigh from the mp3 of this song. It really is a very beautiful version by the way. I suggest that you go out and find it, and download it. The explanation is at the beggining of the song. I won't say where to get it... but it is out there if you search. That's how I got it. There is also acoustic version of Weak and Powerless and A Stranger that I found. As well as the extended 9 minute 22 second version of The Package.

hmmm.... maybe it doesn't fit Bush right now, but again... I don't think that is exactly what he is trying to say. As I said, I think he is hinting to the fact that so many of our leaders are corrupt as it is and get away with things they shouldn't. So I think he is saying that, if there are so many people who are blind or ignorant to this fact where will it end?

Garbage – Androgyny Lyrics 19 years ago
All of you have great ideas, but you are all focusing on sexual "preference." I think this somgs talks about sexual identity as well as sexual preference. I think that there is a message in this songs to those who are gender dyshporic, "transsexuality." "Boys in the girls room, Girls in the men's room, You free your mind in your androgyny," I think refering to those unfortunate souls born in one body but having the sexual identity of the opposite. FTM's are generally more succesful with transition, and therefore overlooked, but MTF's are ridiculed, subjected to hate and violence and it's sad. She's trying say why do we have to judge, "Oh, she used to be a man," who cares, because she has always seen herself as a woman, just born into the wrong body. Just my view, and one I can identify with. ^_^

Tool – Ticks and Leeches Lyrics 19 years ago
I didn't read all of these post yet... but just wanted to drop a little trivia fact. Did you know that the reason Tool has never performed this song live and never will is because Maynard actually lost his voice singing it during the recording sessions? Damn that man has an awesome voice and to think that he lost it on one song...

Oh, and I am a Republican, a US ARMY soldier in Afghanistan for the last 7 months, who supports Bush and I can see that this song can definitely be interpreted as an anti Bush songs. I mean, 6th_sadistic_sniper is right, I think it's alot of Republicans who don't want to admit it's about Bush, but hey... that's Maynard's views and ideals not mine.

A Perfect Circle – Pet Lyrics 19 years ago
LOL this just keeps going back and forth and since I still have the freedom to voice my opinion here it is. Even if it does repeat what has been said already. Well we all know that Maynard's song are can be pretty vague and can be interpereted so many different ways... and I don't know what I thought it meant before... but I think it's meaning now... maybe not Maynard's meaning... but.. considering the new album which was all political. I think it is singing about Politics and War and Polititaefj;aksjf;.... ummm Politics people... lol and how they lie to get your trust until they get in power and then they slowly start to change things. The beginning of the song is like them saying before election... You don't need to worry... if I get elected I will take care of all your problems... I won't let things get like our last president... I will be better than the last like they always do. In the first chorus, I think Maynard may be saying this in the background... like maybe in the politician's (?) head he is thinking about what his true intentions are... Just of people I know say they feel that Bush wanted to finish what his dad started from day one... and all he wanted was the oil. Or I also think could Maynard stepping out of the story for a moment... like a nararrator (? GOD I can't spell tonight to save my life) ... he is saying that we the people are ignorant... we aren't paying attention to whats going on under ours noises... even if it is as obvious as really hearing the beat of war drums. In the next part I think he's pretty much saying... don't listen to the rumors you hear... don't listen to someone who might educate you... "They don't care about you Like I do, like I do", now the guy might not be saying this out load but in the lies and speeches he is giving, he is trying to win your confidence. When he says ""Safe from pain and truth and choice, And other poison devils" I think it's basically like Maynard stepping out again and saying that we are blind to what he is really trying to do. Trying to persude the ignorant and keep them from learning the truth... "Just stay with me, Safe and ignorant" And pretty much the same in the "I'll be the one to protect you from A will to survive and a voice of reason..... I must isolate you Isolate and save you from yourself" part, where I feel he's in power and he's starting to show his true color's and motive's but now it's too late and now the person is trying to take away your freedoms... like your voice to speak out for or against something. And in the end of the song is like the future... we are all brainwashed and "Swayin' to the rhythm of a new world order" things are drastically different now and everybody is going along with it... "The boogeymen comin' (x2), Keep your head down, Go to sleep, To the rhythm of the war drums" To me, here he might be saying that again... it's too late now and the worst is yet to come. But that imho is what I heard the last time I heard the song, I mean considering how Maynard has recently been voicing his political stance.

I just want to say to shadowwiththeeyes that Maynard didn't have an old herion addiction.

Also while he says that yes... there are drug addiction overtones to the songs... they can be taken how ever one feels at the time of listening to it, which may have nothing to do with drugs. Just like with all of Maynard's songs, it's all about meaning to the individual rather than taking it at face value or trying to look at his lyrics and ask him what he meant. That's why Maynard never immediately post his lyrics to his songs on toolband.com or the apc webpage. Anyway, I love all the different ideas people have on their take of these songs, btw.
