| Barenaked Ladies – Maybe You're Right Lyrics

This is my favorite song on "Are Me". I just don't like how it's before "Take It Back" because they each mention taking back something and it confuses me.
Meaning? I'm not sure. Someone regretting what they said when they are sure they were right, and seems willing to take back what he said and admit that the other person was right, but no, he secretly doesn't want to, or at least that's what the last line tells me.
And no one bothered to solve anything in the end. |

It's more as gravity defiant said. Basically the guy shut himself off, burned his bridges, and thought he was alone in some kind of shame. He had these people and he figured it'd be a let-down, so it was in the end and he was proven right, and then suddenly he's proven wrong and he finds that he isn't alone one day, and everything has changed...and it's strange because he's used to the loneliness he made. |

| Barenaked Ladies – Bank Job Lyrics

|
The funniest song on "Are Me", no doubt. I just love the lines, "We all had our ski masks and sawed-off shotguns, but how do you plan for a bank full of nuns?"
I agree with eleventy, it's a song about placing the blame on an individual in a team because they didn't do what they were designated to do.
I just don't get the phone part. Was it just used for the rhyme or is there a point? Is the guy who fouled-up waiting by the phone in jail, or what? Sometimes I think it's about someone who called in what they were doing, but that doesn't make sense since they tell us that person is going to jail... |

It's a bad song, but a good choice for single. The problem with this song is what turned me off of the 'American Idiot' album. American Idiot sounded like a package of every Green Day song, and Beverly Hills sounds like a package of every Weezer song. We don't like a song enough to buy it twice. |

| Everclear – I Will Buy You A New Life Lyrics

Some reason this song sort of seems like the couple is divorced or something, and that he is paying her his money, and that the baby is the one they had, and when he asks to stay and says that no one will have to know, it could be that by law he isn't allowed there.
But that's just a thought...and it wouldn't really fit with Art's background, I think...maybe |

| Semisonic – This Will Be My Year Lyrics

It's about living the lonely life and always believing that what we're waiting for will come along. It's really I guess a song about hope that someday you will get that girl that you dream of as horrible as it seems to get there. |

remember though, it's not on the ordinary version of the album, so it's not typically the song the album would end with, it's a bonus track, after all. So you have to give it credit and note that technically it's not part of the album and so it should not affect 'When You Dream' ...but it is weird to have this song following that one...seems almost contradicting |

| Barenaked Ladies – Elf's Lament [featuring Michael Bublé] Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
Totally agreeable. I mean, Elfs may just be a term used to state the situation better for those like them that aren't really given anything for their hard work. They don't get appreciated for their work. And we just don't give a damn about the product they worked so hard on to live.
So...I guess we're all big giant a-holes in the end. Go figure.
There's nothing wrong with overthinking the album. It may be just one big holiday message that tells us to be in the TRUE Christmas spirit. Well...aside from the chanakuh songs which...Well...I'm not JEwish so I won't go into that in fear I know nothing about it.
Most of the new and original songs to the album are all about the same thing really. Snowman could be that we should get involved in XMAS, Elf's Lament is that we should appreciate the gifts that we buy or get, XMAS Pics may be that we should focus on our family.
Then there's Deck the Stills...which...that's just fun. |

Wow...Apparently Elf's are depressed and opressed by Santa and are tired of doing so much work for little. THey also mention how all teh gifts they give are just put onto shelves and are dissapointing, and are upset that no one appreciates their work. And they just get tired of giving things to people who just want. People who are so un-XMAS like. GIve people! |

Ah...doesn't it just scream Christmas...for a dysfunctional family. Actually, it's relatable to any family so maybe it's not so much dysfunction as the modern view of fuction. HOw did I just become a Functionalist Sociologist? I'm supposed to be an interactionalist. |

| Barenaked Ladies – Back Lyrics
|
I don't know why, but I seem to find this song the funniest of all of the BNL songs. It's just about someone who breaks their back and becomes paralyzed, and that's sort of morbid, but I find it funny anyway. Because it's also fun seeing how they talk about the things that came with breaking a back. Like what they can do with their wheelchairs. THe clapper. He took moving around for granted and now he's paying for it.
It could be looked at in a more philosophical way. LIke I said, it could be talking about the moment where you lose all those things you take for granted, and that always sucks. But you have to look on the bright side like he does when he talks about the hocky cards in the spokes and the front row seats at concerts and the good parking spots. |

| Barenaked Ladies – Snowman Lyrics

|
I don't know about shutting down all emotion, because there are emotiosn in the lyrics still. And he may not have thrown off all human contact either. He just isn't contacting.
THis reminds me now that I've thought about it of myself. THere always is that one day out of the year in which you just freak out a bit and get real mad at everyone and just sit off to the side and watch people go by and you sort of wonder how you can possibly human when everyone you see have a life different than yours and you suddenly seem insignificant in response. And maybe melting away isn't about dying at all or going away, but returning from your cold state to come back into the world.
And even weirder theory I see is something about a hopeless relationship. LIke the narrators been with someone for awhile and they just don't see how they fit into the equation, Couplewise or maybe familywise. And before you ever get the chance you let time slip by too much.
And maybe I should stop thinking about this song so much. |

| Barenaked Ladies – Snowman Lyrics
|
It's sort of a sad song to be on a Christmas album, eh? At first it's sort of like, the narrator is a snowman and he's watching the world go by. But...maybe the snowman is more envious of normal people and he hates that he is different. THe part about I don't fit in would probably support that. It goes into the death of the snowman too though. That's pretty sad. Maybe the song is more about that life is short, get used to it. Or maybe it's more like if you don't act you will never get what you want.
But it's BNL. It could possibly be just a song about a snowman with a bit of dark humour.
Someone else comment! We need a consensus on what this song means. |

I really think that the background sound adds effect to the song. I just can't tell what the sound is. A washboard? Sort of sounds like it or that little ovalish percussion instrument you move the stick down and back over. It could be tons of things. Wish I knew. |

I like to think that the song is also about how little terrible things build up to bigger things. I sort of find it funny, at least the opening. Much like everyone else I too believe this could be many things. It does sound right to say it's about how you should have hope for better things and just relax for the moment and cast your worry aside to just watch the world go by. The song even matches the sort of mood and tone that would fit the situation when you sit back and relax and don't worry and simply do nothing but breathe. |

It's about MILF. Isn't that what Simon & Garfunkel did with Mrs. Robinson? Anyway, this song really sucks compared to the rest. I can see why though it was the first single because it catches people's attentions. The video is great though, especially the homage to Fast Times at Ridgemont High. |

WalrusMan is right about this song. It's about the end to a relationship. The divvy up the wine part shows that they are placing things into categories of what is his and what is theirs. That's the end to any relationship really. And I do think the tone he has show he does accept this. I mean, it'd sound much sadder if he hadn't, or more angry. |

This song seems to be about touring in general. Nothing more I think. It's the same meaning that 'Road Trip' by Steriogram has. Basically how the road isn't all too great, and just shows a narrative of trips. |

| The Shins – Kissing the Lipless Lyrics

The intro is about the current sexual activity. No doubt. SOng being about a break-up, very possible. Either that or they're two people who just never got together but wanted to.
Kissing the lipless could mean there is no more love. They tucked in their lips into their mouth and won;t let a kiss go, but I think it talks of the girl, and she is kissing meaningless people or maybe the guy is, whatever. NO lips=no love or commitment I would think. |

BNL should get a prize just for slipping gastointestinal and cardiovascular into a song. I think it's hard to throw such words in.
THe song from what I see is about the old age problem of love, what with the going with the guts or the heart. It may also be about just eating a lot of the girl's cooking. BNL can be funny that way, |

If I put a meaning to this song aside from fun as thejames pointed out, I would have to say I find that when they say if they had $1000000 they'd be rich, and they say they can buy the girls love I'd say it's actually that the love makes them rich. I mean, all the things they talk about are 'cute' little nice couple things and a dream a couple may have. IF I had the money I'd get you a great house. So on and on. |

This is my favorite song they do live. It's obvious what it's about though, so there's no point in saying it's about being in love with a girl who works at McDs. Though, the guy seems afraid and never says anything to her. I think I'm gonna base my next novel off this song it's so good.

I'm confused by this song. You think in the beginning it's about a girl, but then a dog, but then Jesus.
I think it's about Jesus though. That's what fits in with all of the song if you'll notice. Especially the end. The part about monkies is like a teleevangelist.
And many people have photos of Jesus and his mom lying around. Especially his mom praying. Charo could be in there for fun or just to show something I'm not aware of. |

The song is about Christmas from The Grinch's point of view I think. It was written for that movie with Jim Carrey after all and then repackaged onto 'Maybe This Christmas Too?' and more recently 'Barenaked for the Holidays'. It could also mean that they were jealous of the other people who were having fun. envy and green you know? Anyway, that's what Grinch really was so that fits in too. |

Didn't one of BNL laugh when they said that they thought this was fate or something? Like, he feels that by writing this song it would all end up like it? Maybe that's another reason for naming their first compilation like they did. Of course, they're not done yet, and so that means that wasn't the true disc one of the Box set though. They probably have better hits a-coming. |

Aside from being a self-proclaimed arachnophobic Jim wrote this song about a spider that would hang in the corner of his sandbox as a kid as well as how his brother, John, held 'spider-hunts' and would use a vacumn to suck up a spider in the house. Hence the line about the hoover. |

Hello City is about one of the band's earlier days while still a duo and travelling with Corky and the Juice Pigs. They came to a city during the second length of the tour and nobody liked them. They were just miserable, and it was just a terrible experience. So they wrote a song about it to get back at them I guess. |
