It's all about context... this song was on the Muscle Museum EP from '99. Given that, it's understandable parts of it are somewhat dated now. |

| Porcupine Tree – I Drive the Hearse Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
"When this freedom stains my coat With the winter in my throat When I'm lost I dig the dirt When I fall I drive the hearse" Makes me think of a man who goes out to walk, even in the rain, to escape from his unhappy relationship. Maybe the freedom mentioned is rain.. and is better as far as he is concerned than the warm prison of his house. "when I'm lost I dig the dirt" ... gardening perhaps? maybe the "hearse" is one of those horribly massive cars people seem to get because they're sensible and good for herding kids around. "Silence is another way Of saying what I want to say Lying is another way Of hoping it will go away You were always my mistake" The man has given up even arguing with his wife anymore. He just shuts up and tries to put up with it. Maybe he only married her because he didn't think he could find anyone better? "Sleeping with my ball and chain When she cries I take the blame" The first line makes me think of them sleeping together at night. He feels tied to this woman he doesn't love any more and the second line... perhaps its just my observations, but women always seem to get more pity in these kind of situations. Maybe it's because women are more vocal about problems than men. But this man is hurting and upset as well... but he gets blamed for the shortcomings in their relationship. "Pride is just another way Of trying to live with my mistakes Denial is a better way Of getting through another day" The mistake being marrying this woman, or not talking soon enough about how it isn't working? Pride because his life is seemingly perfect.. nice house, nice job, house, car, kids, wife etc...? This song makes me very sad. If my father was able to express his emotions better I suspect his outpouring would be along these lines. |

...and if anyone is interested, Junction 8 of the M1 is just outside Hemel Hempstead... perhaps that's the junction in question? |

| Porcupine Tree – The Incident Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I think it's a step sideways for the band... FOAB was so venomous and angry... a great album and one that has aided the band in expanding their fanbase. The Incident is more like The Turn of the Screw... dark, creepy and definitely something that works on your brain slowly. I don't think it will do as well as Fear sadly. I adore it though. I love this song. Bizarrely, I gave this album a spin in the car this morning and this song came on as I was stuck on Junction 8 of the M4 after a really nasty accident on a nearby road. When I drove home this evening there was sawdust all over the road and I felt a little bit sick to think it was to dry up the blood of the motorcyclist who was killed. I'm just as guilty of anyone of dehumanising accidents and this song kind of put that into perspective. |

| Porcupine Tree – Kneel and Disconnect Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I read on the info sent out about the special edition album that there was a song concerning Wilson turning his back on a traditional career in favour of pursuing his musical ambitions. Perhaps this is it? If this is the case, 'kneel and disconnect' could perhaps be the pattern his was following prior to changing direction - giving in to the pressure for a normal less risky career. Disconnecting from his dreams. Beautiful song though. Would love to hear an extended version of it! |

| Porcupine Tree – Remember Me Lover Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I don't have a problem with the lyrics personally. I enjoy the fact that Wilson experiments with various different songwriting styles in his music. I think he encapsulates perfectly the breakdown of a long term relationship in this song. Very nice ending to a very nice album! :) | |
| Riverside – The Same River Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Absolutely stunning. For me, this song seems to show both the light and dark sides to a serious relationship... | |
| Porcupine Tree – Collapse The Light Into Earth Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This is from the Futile EP. I believe I read on porcupinetree.com that this was going to be at the start of In Absentia. I really like this song despite it coming in at only 1:40. Very sad and haunting. |

| Porcupine Tree – Stars Die Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I have a line from this song tattooed around my wrist I love it that much. Every single time I hear this song I am overwhelmed by a deep, beautiful sense of melancholia and reminded of ultimately how insignificant we are individually. Everything must come to an end eventually... there is little point of being afraid of death for it will come for us all and envelope us in layers of sleep and darkness. The sample of Nixon talking is as follows if anyone is interested. I find it quite haunting given the troubles that have followed since 1969. "Hello Neil and Buzz, I am talking to you by telephone from the Oval Room at the White House, and this certainly has to be the most historic telephone call ever made from the White House. I just can’t tell you how proud we all are of what you have done. For every American this has to be the proudest day of our lives, [ ----- and for people all over the world I am sure that they, too, join with Americans in recognizing what an immense feat this is.-----] Because of what you have done the heavens have become a part of man’s world, and as you talk to us from the Sea of Tranquility, it inspires us to redouble our efforts to bring peace and tranquility to earth." |

| Porcupine Tree – Cure for Optimism Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I interpret this song as about the music industry again.... the mountain possibly referring to the famous bands whilst SW feels he is achieving nothing in his ocean. I can imagine the band having their photo taken feeling kinda dispirited not knowing if it's going to be worth it. The next part does seem to be about perhaps a mental institution or maybe about feeling caged in like some kind of animal. "They can plead and beg but don't let them fix your head" I suffer from bi-polar disorder and I believe it is both a blessing and a curse. Some of my greatest pieces of writing have been when I have been feeling one extreme or the other. The final lines make me think of PR/management types... "A serpent with a mobile phone Sweet talks me" Hmmm. I'm just not sure. I do enjoy how ambiguous PTs music is. Makes it much more fun :) |

| Porcupine Tree – The Moon Touches Your Shoulder Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
The first verse makes me think of time - "Springtime is over /creep over stone" and how it appears not to move on a daily basis then suddenly can catch up with you. The second verse is perhaps the sun personified - "No time to forget this World's in your eyes" and "Sway in the cloud blur And light up the sky" point towards the idea this verse is about the sun as well. and the final verse makes me think of night - "Cast off the colour And tune in to black" with the final section perhaps being about the moon going down "The moon touches your shoulder" (shoulder of Earth?) and bringing with it the return of day "And brings the day back". Either way, I adore this song. |

| The Pineapple Thief – My Debt to You Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Death... Of a friend, perhaps a lover although I think it seems a little too composed to be about a lover. "We grow older, older A little closer, a little closer" Older and closer to death - and to the person this song is about. "And you stay, fallen, fallen And its too late, its too late, now" Whilst they grow older, the person who has died remains as they are frozen in memories. "Here's my debt to you I wanted to say I breath for you But you are a world away, a world away" The person who is still alive feels guilty perhaps... maybe they didn't tell the person how much they meant to them and now they don't have the chance. "I breathe for you" suggest that they are living for the person who has died as well. "Left in the same walls, the same walls Can you see them, can you see them" Person who remains is stuck in the same life as they were before their friend (lover?) and are wondering if the departed can see them (as a spirit or ghost maybe) "Left on long wall, long wall They didn't need to, they didn't need to, for me" drawing a blank on this part. Perhaps the wall is to symbolise life? I'm not sure. "And I grow older, older A little closer, a little closer To you" To me this backs up my theory of it being about death of a friend/lover... Meh. Just my interpretation of this song. I do really like this band despite only just having heard them! |

| Porcupine Tree – Even Less Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
the full version of this song makes me think it relates to how SW isn't as famous or as well known as he could have been. The additional lyrics to this extended version make this quite clear "Fuck you and your book too You can have it back When I'm gone these songs will Will be my tracks And I had a stupid dream that I could change things But I'm a martyr to even less I hate the ground that I have walked upon Nothing I've done has ever mattered long" I previously thought this was simply about growing up with a friend who passed away somehow but this extra part to the song makes me think it has duel meanings - both a reflection on a childhood friend and a lament for the widespread recognition SW could have had. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Piggy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| it's worth noting that The Downward Spiral was recorded in the house where Sharon Tate was murdered. And Trent Reznor took the door from the house when he moved out of it... which is a tad strange, but there we go, that's NiN all over! | |
| Mew – Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"Halfway through flight there-to Where will you go? Falling down on the ground Where will you go now?" A pilot is in the air on his way to his destination and runs into some problems half way through the flight. "Do you remember what made you fall? And does it matter to you at all? This part sounds like a conversation between pilot and co-pilot asking what has happened and why they're crashing. One of them is pretending to themself that they're going to survive and the other remarks they'll see what lies will make them feel better tonight (bare in mind most planes don't just drop out the sky, they would have a long cruise down to the ground probably) "You wanna go, you wanna see What lies could set you free You wanna see, right? You'll know this night" This next bit makes me think of the idea of the afterlife and a longing on one of the people's parts to wake up in the afterlife.. in a kind of continuation with their partner. Maybe like waking up from a bad dream and realising it wasn't real? That kind of thing... "It's a nice day, i think To wake up with you" This part is kind of puzzling. I don't know enough about planes to suggest a problem that might only affect a pilot in the dark.. "You cannot see them when it is light This is the reason we go at night" Then this part is kind of self-explanatory... as for the blue part, this made me think of being professional and calm despite what's going on? Pilots tend to cope well under extreme pressure.: "In the darkest flight of my career I am made blue all through" Despite all this, they keep trying to save the plane and themselves, all the while thinking of their loved ones... "On my dark descend I persevere I am thinking of you" The final part maybe is as they're about to crash and they're hoping against hope that things are going to change and go back to normal/afterlife idea again.. all the while thinking about their loved ones... "Where will you go now? It's a nice way, i think To wake up with you A nice way I'm separated from you" |

| Mew – White Lips Kissed Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| For me, this song is about fear. Fear of letting go of yourself around others, fear of people finding out who you really are, fear of trying incase you mess up even worse... fear of losing the person you love because you just can't let your guard down and fear of the constant worry you feel. | |
| Porcupine Tree – Prodigal Lyrics | 17 years ago |

To me this song is about realising your life is stagnating and attempting to do something about it but after making the changes and trying to reinvent yourself you realise that the things you hate most about your life are what's inside you. I can really relate the the lines: "I spend my days with all my friends They're the ones on who my life depends I'm gonna miss them when the series ends" This is certainly about filling the void in your social life with TV programs. It links in with "..I tried the smoke" since stoners will often spend hours vegetating watching TV.... there's a longing for more social interaction but at the same time you feel so disconnected from others and struggle to maintain the friendships that you have. "These are my old clothes This is a new low" Also makes me think of the idea of reinventing yourself to try and fit in. Personally I have tried to change my image to fit in more with the people I live with and yet the situations I have found myself in over the past year have made me feel worse... New clothes.. or the shedding of your old ones can't remove your personality traits. The "Rain keeps crawling down the glass" makes me think of the times when you feel depressed and lethargic and can't bring yourself to do things.. you end up wasting time just sat watching... I can see the serial killer link in this song.. but at the same time I think this is more about the way that it is easy to subtly kill your own life through inaction and allowing yourself to wallow in your depression and getting hung up over things that you can't change. |

| Porcupine Tree – The Sound Of Muzak Lyrics | 18 years ago |

A little something I learned today whilst researching about PR- "Newsak is based on the more familiar Musak, a branded broadcast system commonly found in hotels and other public buildings" So that explains the spelling and confirms the song lyrics nicely :) |

I can't help but think of Suzanne Vegas 'Luca' when I listen to this song... Lucille living downstairs.. Luca living on the second floor.. .I dunno. Terrorwalking: Why don't you grow up a little and learn to respect different types of music? When you're a bit older you'll realise that it's okay to like a HUGE range of music. Yep, Otep are great.... but just because you like one type of music doesn't mean everything else is instantly crap. So learn some respect since at the very least you won't look like a total close minded idiot on the internet then :) |

| Muse – Butterflies and Hurricanes Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| This song is just... astounding. Having been a fan of Muse for nearly 4 years now, seeing them evolve into this rock butterfly they've become is pretty cool. The false ending had me when I first heard it :) | |

No comments? This is a beautiful song... It's got that raw, intense feeling in it which just makes me want to cry.. This is /just/ how I feel at the moment. With a holiday coming up, I can't Self Harm, but I need to because I've been messed around by a male, leaving me really angry with myself. But yes, a gooood song. :) |
