My Debt to You Lyrics
We grow older, older
A little closer, a little closer
And you stay, fallen, fallen
And its too late, its too late, now
Here’s my debt to you
I wanted to say I breath for you
But you are a world away, a world away
Left in the same walls, the same walls
Can you see them, can you see them
Left on long wall, long wall
They didn’t need to, they didn’t need to, for me
So here’s my debt to you,
I wanted to say I breath for you,
But you are a world away, a world away
So here’s my debt to you,
I wanted to say I live for you,
But you are a world away, a world away
And I grow older, older
A little closer, a little closer
To you
A little closer, a little closer
And you stay, fallen, fallen
And its too late, its too late, now
I wanted to say I breath for you
But you are a world away, a world away
Can you see them, can you see them
Left on long wall, long wall
They didn’t need to, they didn’t need to, for me
I wanted to say I breath for you,
But you are a world away, a world away
I wanted to say I live for you,
But you are a world away, a world away
A little closer, a little closer
To you

Death... Of a friend, perhaps a lover although I think it seems a little too composed to be about a lover.
"We grow older, older A little closer, a little closer"
Older and closer to death - and to the person this song is about.
"And you stay, fallen, fallen And its too late, its too late, now"
Whilst they grow older, the person who has died remains as they are frozen in memories.
"Here's my debt to you I wanted to say I breath for you But you are a world away, a world away"
The person who is still alive feels guilty perhaps... maybe they didn't tell the person how much they meant to them and now they don't have the chance. "I breathe for you" suggest that they are living for the person who has died as well.
"Left in the same walls, the same walls Can you see them, can you see them"
Person who remains is stuck in the same life as they were before their friend (lover?) and are wondering if the departed can see them (as a spirit or ghost maybe)
"Left on long wall, long wall They didn't need to, they didn't need to, for me"
drawing a blank on this part. Perhaps the wall is to symbolise life? I'm not sure.
"And I grow older, older A little closer, a little closer To you"
To me this backs up my theory of it being about death of a friend/lover...
Meh. Just my interpretation of this song. I do really like this band despite only just having heard them!
i don't think this is necessarily dedicated to a person who has died, but to a person who has loved you and doesn't love you anymore.
sometimes we are in a relationship and suddenly discover we are not in love anymore, don't we? so i think this is what the song is about. he talks about how we are growing up, living day by day, going on... and then we find out that we are not the same person we once were and that person is not the one he/she once was, and therefore we have no interest in some people or things anymore. that's why the line "you are a world away, a world away" fits perfectly, because the relationship gets colder: we forgot, we get tired, we move on... i don't know how to explain or say it, you know, we just need another thing and we need to go for it. in this particular case, as some sentences show ("So here's my debt to you, I wanted to say I live for you"), the writer might be the rejected person, that one who is no longer loved ("And I grow older, older a little closer, a little closer to you" - he hasn't stopped loving her/him).
i'm not sure of this, but well... just a new point of view!
To me this song’s about the act of carrying on living after the devastation of losing a loved one and with the sudden severing of all contact with that person, the emotional wasteland that’s left and the deep yearning to make contact with that person again. Left in the same walls.. he’s wondering if the dead survive in some form and can still see those left alive. Left on long wall could be a metaphor for how isolated he feels from the world in his grief and the next line an acknowledgement of the support offered by those around him. His debt is repaid by surviving and getting older, even though he doesn’t want to.
