Logged in (and tediously came back to this page, because songmeanings has a contrived homepage-redirect log-in procedure) just to write that this is the best interpretation of a song on the site.

Come off it, we don't need unevidenced ancient tales to be happy.

Dr. Dog – Dutchman Falls Lyrics 17 years ago
The last four lines sound like:
"Now, rage--it were a virtue.
And pride--it weren't a sin.
I have no need for redemption.
I have no need for him."

Foals – Cassius Lyrics 17 years ago
Kudos to brain_case for his skillful avoidance of any relevant points and creating one hell of a strawman argument. Amazing how the mere mention of the word "vegan" sets him off on myth-laden rants--insecure much? For anyone else: http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/

Forget the video; the song's addictive and fun.

Panic! at the Disco – I Write Sins Not Tragedies Lyrics 19 years ago
"The only difference between misogyny in run-of-the-mill rock songs, misogyny in hip-hop, and misogyny in run-of-the-mill emo songs is how far the singer's balls have dropped. All of it, however, is selling like hotcakes, and Panic's rise from Fall Out Boy's pet project to platinum-polishing boy toys is proof of that. They can swathe their broken hearts in pre-pubescent warbling and polysyllabic pretensions all they want. It won't change the fact that this woe-is-me story of a groom learning some dirt about his bride right before the wedding is just another stupid song about a dude getting screwed over by a girl performed by dudes that don't sound like they've ever screwed in a lightbulb, on an album full of the stuff. These kids should take their own advice: Face this sort of nonsense with a little poise and rationale, and leave the woman-hating for the booth-tanned grunge fucks."

The Maccabees – Lego Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know anything for certain, but it sounds like a mental reflection on a divorce. The first three lines would be the children comparing and deciding with whom they want to live. The second verse would be a parallel of how the children's toys won't stay together, much like their parents' relationship.

The chorus, then, is an ironic recollection of how they always felt close because of the way they held hands, but now the road only serves as a strectch of separation.

The middle section is a bit hazy, but the fourth verse is an allusion: even though they didn't want anything to change, they realized that wishing could not take them to any place but where they were.

Panic! at the Disco – I Constantly Thank God For Esteban Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, amazing--calling out a group of people for being fake while, at the same time, being one of the most pretentious bands I've ever heard. And, yes, proclaiming to be completely unpretentious in every song has the opposite effect. Panic! At the Disco's narcissism is on a level with talking to people who reference themselves in the third person.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Clap Your Hands! Lyrics 20 years ago
Every time I hear this song it feels as if I'm in a giant circus tent, haha. The mid-section is the best, with the ringleader enthusiastically encouraging everyone to "CLAP YOUR HANDS!!!", but we have this one guy who is trying to change the subject and make every excuse not to, ending with a line that trails off as he is probably turning to walk away: "I'll just wait....awhile..."

Fun.

My Favorite – homeless club kids Lyrics 20 years ago
This My Favorite's best song. It could be put onto an 80s mixtape alongside Duran Duran, A-ha, and A Flock of Seagulls and no one would notice; the difference is that this song doesn't contain any of the cheesiness associated with some of the artists from that period, and the lyrical depth gives artists like Morrissey a good run for seeing who can write the most depressing upbeat piece possible.

It is admitting to yourself that you're growing away from the club scene. And all of your friends are still having the time of their lives wrapped up in it. You begin to see how they now all look the same--how they appear "indivisible." And you realize, twofold, that you were no different and that it's the same scripted actions every night. "Do you really want to stay lost?" So you take one last memory of your time there...and you never look back. "They're sad and young, and they'll be sad and young forever." It's admitting that the people you loved won't be the same people you need anymore. You've changed. "And I cry until I throw up."

It is the representation of dancing all night by yourself after the loss of a friend.

Stars – Your Ex-Lover Is Dead Lyrics 20 years ago
"...an exquisitely warm brass section helps tell a call-and-response story of half-regret, of seeing someone you once fucked at a party, knowing they never hurt you the way they could've, and feeling awkward, hateful and oddly wistful about it."

damn, yeah...even if thedysfunktion doesn't have it right, that's the most in depth explanation I've seen, and it makes sense.
