| The Who – 1921 Lyrics
|
|
It\'s 1921. Tommy was born in 1914, while his father Captain Walker was off fighting World War I, however, he doesn\'t return from the war, so it is assumed he is dead. In this song, Captain Walker finally reappears at home 7 years later to find his wife with another man. Captain Walker murders the other man (Who is the speaker in the first verse of the song) and Tommy watches the whole thing. So they obviously tell him to keep his mouth shut about it, which sends him off into this state of deafness / blindness / dumbness, which affects him throughout most of the album. |

They are just singing the lyrics printed here. The one guy starts with "If the past were photographs, I 'd tear them all up into shreds." The other starts with "Just the prettiest..." |

I honestly don't know how you could get something that specific out of one line in a pretty general song, but whatever. It just seems unlikely to me that he would take a fairly personal sounding song and randomly throw in some line about the war in Iraq out of no where, especially when the rest of it doesn't add up to that at all.
I see it more as a mood of searching. Looking for something comforting and hopeful, such as one's own home:
"The road leads somewhere, but it's not yet to your door."
That's why is disappoints him when the places he used to know aren't the same and the memories seem lost:
Let's go down to the old South End, where we used to meet
Take me back to the basements and alleys on Walbridge Street
Ah, but it'll only make me sadder when I can't conjure ghosts no more
And due to this he has this feeling of loneliness and loss, like there isn't a reason for these problems with people. He does not feel the comfort he seeks because everyone seems to be out to get each other:
"And you still see people waiting for the next excuse for war."
And if that is a statement about war itself, I see it more as one of distaste for war in general, the human nature of it, and how it relates to his searching for the answers, not some specific protest. |

It would be one thing, however, if he referred to this she as temptation, lust, sin, or things along those lines. He does not use this language, though, when he speaks of his "Sweetheart" moving away. I just think that if he were speaking of the devil he would use more filthy imagery than "sweetheart", which doesn't necessarily have anything to do with sin or temptation. |

I agree with the majority of what q.zus has to say, except for the fact that he feels the song is entirely about a girl. I see it more as him having this "addiction" to the girl that is bad for him, and finding a solution, hope, or answer in God.
The bright colored fish are actually the girl that he can't take his eyes off of and wants so badly, and God is not as overtly attractive on the surface. To him, God and his faith are almost hidden in a dull, boring shell next to all the other sins and attractions of the world. Yet if he takes the time to open the shell and pursue religion, he finds a wonderful suprise, "You, my hidden pearl of pure and perfect love and I'm living example of 100% the opposite of this."
And the line towards the end, "But you untie me - didn't you untie me, lord?" is basically him saying that God is what saved him from this woman, and other distractions in life. God untied him from all his misery and the thread that this woman lead him by and tied him up with. |

| Hot Cross – Throw Collars to the Wind Lyrics

Oh and Throw Collars To The Wind, in my mind, refers to his analogy of, "There's no chance of seeing through the disguises when your only staring through holes torn and burned." It's like he/they have been dragging this situation on so long that almost all has been burned away, except for the collars, which, being the remaining part of the disguise, they just toss away, leaving nothing but the truth remaining. |

I'm digging on what Hyperbole has to say. I was thinking more specifically gay marriage when I read it, but I can definitely see it as more of a showcase for how much wrong people commit in the name of religion, just by twisting the principles of it to fit their own prejudices and desires. |

My call is that people love big stories. They love the news. They eat it up even when people are suffering in the stories. It's not the suffering they are concerned with, or the wrongs that have been committed, it's just the story itself that they love. People could care less about the personal aspects. I feel this is best exemplified when he says, "Did you hear about the man who locked his daughter
in the basement for 12 years? They dragged her out of the house to the hungry audience." |

| Saetia – From The Firmament Lyrics

Well he talks about namesakes and teaching him that it is better to be accepted than respected, so I can only assume that he is speaking to one of his parents, not a lover. From his words, my call is that he did something that they don't approve of, yet he believes in. They must have deserted him or something, and he doesn't think that's right to be left all alone and unloved just because he stood for something as opposed to just doing what would gain acceptance. |

I appreciate you contributing these lyrics because I haven't been able to get my hands on this 7 inch, so I had no idea what the lyrics were. Now that I look at them, it seems more to just be an all out rant about bouncing back from problems and tough spots. He has learned to thrive in his adversity and he's explaining to someone else that they need to learn how to do the same. Might I add that Billy is my favorite lyricist out there because of pieces like this. |

Billy seems to be big into Salman Rushdie. This is an exerpt from his book, Midnight's Children, "Who what am I? My answer: I am the sum total of everything that went before me, of all I have have been seen done, of everything done-to-me. I am everyone, everything whose being-in-the-world affected was affected by mine. I am anything that happens after I've gone which would not have happened if I had not come. Nor am I particularly exceptional in this matter; each "I", every one of the now-six-million-plus of us, contains a similar multitude. I repeat for the last time: to understand me, you'll have to swallow a world." Last line look familiar? |

| Minus the Bear – Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!! Lyrics

I love Minus the Bear, but I'm not going to give you one of those weak, "My band can do no wrong, how can you say that?!" opinions. You can sit there and try and rationalize by saying that the lyrics are great because they are simple and whatnot, but the fact is that they really do have terrible, boring, and unintelligent lyrics. But that doesn't change the fact that they are a great band. |

My take: More of a hypothetical scenario about how cloning and playing God and all that jazz should be banned. The 12 civilians are the jury who represent humans, in general. They are saying that they didn't stop it when they could (Asleep is a metaphor for this). Cells dividing, new bodies, trading minds, etc. |

It almost sounds like "Despised and left me behind." or something to me. Not sure about those other lines, though the pieces you have there seem to make pretty good sense. Both times I saw them they were explosive as hell and just put on an awesome show. Unfortunately this song wasn't played either time, though. |

This one is about moving on in life. To paraphrase the last few lines: All you need is a dream and a heart, you don't need to run away and find another life. It's ok to look into the past in order to learn some lessons, but you gotta let go of your pride and just keep moving on. |

This really is the most ignorant band on the planet. I'll sum up this song for you in one sentence, "Let's rebel against whatever has the power in society so our fans will think we are socially conscious and morally upright, while using unnecessarily violent lyrics to still retain that old punk image and mask the fact that we are dumb as a bag of hammers." Way cool, guys. |

I read an interview in which Geoff said this song was about a disagreement he had with his girlfriend over their differing views on abortion and how it ruined their relationship. This really makes a lot of sense, especially the line,
"administer the pill before the cell divides"
and just the fact that Geoff said it himself, though I don't remember who the interviewer was. |
