Sounds like some dude is pointing out to his gal pal that the guy she was stuck on just bailed and that she should choose him -- but be realistic. He doesn't want to be stuck in a relationship where he's her "shadow" -- he isn't "going to follow" her into a pointless relationship. He will, however, be there "when the lights go down." The "lalala " and "uhhhh" moaning in the end seems like a sarcastic jab at idiot sex sounds. Hilarious song in its own cynical way....

This song is clearly referencing the American Civil War from the perspective of a very tall tree that is remembering a terrible battle of many years ago. His “roots are deeper than the bones, the others”

The “color of the sky in winter” is gray, the color of the Confederate soldiers’ uniforms. “Blue as the night” are the Union soldiers’ uniforms. “They fell through the whole day and night.” Obviously the soldiers were dying in battle.

The “colors flew high as they danced in the sky” are the flags of each of these warring armies that the tree saw as they came over the hill. The “sticks that made thunder” are their rifles.
The “little white trees that don’t bend in the breeze” are the crosses marking the graves of the soldiers, “the ones that will never return.”
It is a hauntingly sad song with an absolutely captivating tune that I cannot seem to get out of my mind. In spite of this, it is still one of my favorite Steel Drivers songs.

The song depicts the exhilarating, reckless thrill of flying high and engaging in battle. It celebrates living on the edge, pushing limits, and feeling invincible, as symbolized by the imagery of being up on "cloud nine." The characters may die in recklessness or battle, but the thrill of it all erases all worries.

This song is a celebration of strength, individuality, and the refusal to be oppressed, portraying the rebellion against societal norms and injustices, advocating for a steadfast attitude in the face of challenges. Ultimately, the song encourages listeners to stand tall, be true to themselves, and not let anyone dampen their spirit or grind them down.

This is one of my favorite Counting Crows songs. It has a powerful effect on me when I listen to it that is hard to describe. Its interesting that someone thought it was about a prostitute who was trying to escape and was stuggling to begin a normal life, and that makes sense the more I think about it. However I've always thought that is was about a women who had a very rough childhood where she was abused or neglected by her parents and no one really cared about her. Its interesting that someone thought it was about a prostitute who was trying to escape and was stuggling to begin a normal life, and that makes sense the more I think about it. However I've always thought that is was about a women who had a very rough childhood where she was abused or neglected by her parents and no one really cared about her. She has become an outcast and this has followed her into adulthood, and she's so afraid of being alone and facing her past that she gambles excessively and tries hard to please people who just want to use her, as she thinks that they are her friends. She probably lives in a dirty, run-down house or apartment that is littered with fast food wrappers, TV dinner trys, and soda cans and takes an anti-depressant every night to take to edge off, but contemplates overdosing and committing suicide. I really feel sorry for anyone who lives this life in reality.
