Once there was this girl I knew
She had all she could want
But her unhappiness
Preceded what she bought

She said, "Everyone around here
Is wasting my time"
All of her possessions
Couldn't make her feel fine

She wants everyone to sit around
And talk about her life
Don't ask her how she feels
'Cause that would be a lie

[Chorus]
Don't tell me 'cause you know
I know it hurts
Don't tell me 'cause you know
It's gotten worse
Don't tell me 'cause you think
I don't know shit about the way you feel
Tell me 'cause
I don't want you to hurt

She sat around like a vintage queen
To complain about the world
She says how she's much better than you
She's a special girl

She said, "Everyone around here
Is wasting my time"
All of her boyfriends
Couldn't make her feel fine

[Chorus]

She said, "Everyone around here
Is wasting my time"
All of her boyfriends
Couldn't make her feel fine

[Chorus: x 3]

Love this song, one of their best maybe. Far as i can see, it's about a stubborn, spoilt girl, who is unhappy with her life, but he's the only one who understannds her.

    My Interpretation

I think this song is about how everyone is depressed mostly because of materialism but try their best to hide their feelings in this stubborn society.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
