In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Puttin' my defenses up
'Cause I don't wanna fall in love
If I ever did that, I think I'd have a heart attack
Never put my love out on the line
Never said "yes" to the right guy
Never had trouble getting what I want
But when it comes to you, I'm never good enough
When I don't care, I can play 'em like a Ken doll
Won't wash my hair, then make 'em bounce like a basketball
But you make me wanna act like a girl
Paint my nails and wear high heels, yes you
Make me so nervous, that I just can't hold your hand
You make me glow
But I cover up, won't let it show
So I'm puttin' my defenses up
'Cause I don't wanna fall in love
If I ever did that, I think I'd have a heart attack
I think I'd have a heart attack
I think I'd have a heart attack
Never break a sweat for the other guys
When you come around, I get paralyzed
And every time I try to be myself
It comes out wrong like a cry for help
It's just not fair
Pain's more trouble than love is worth
I gasp for air
It feels so good, but you know it hurts
But you make me wanna act like a girl
Paint my nails and wear perfume, for you
Make me so nervous, that I just can't hold your hand
You make me glow
But I cover up, won't let it show
So I'm puttin' my defenses up
'Cause I don't wanna fall in love
If I ever did that, I think I'd have a heart attack
I think I'd have a heart attack
I think I'd have a heart attack
The feelings got lost in my lungs
They're burning, I'd rather be numb
And there's no one else to blame
So scared, I take off and I run
I'm flying too close to the sun
And I burst into flames
You make me glow
But I cover up, won't let it show
So I'm puttin' my defenses up
'Cause I don't wanna fall in love
If I ever did that, I think I'd have a heart attack
I think I'd have a heart attack (heart attack)
I think I'd have a heart attack
Oh, I think I'd have a heart attack

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
I interpret the lyrics pretty simply. It's about a girl who has confidence getting guys she isn't that interested in. However when it comes to guys she's pretty interested in then all her confidence goes away as she doesn't know how to handle potentials she sees of high value.
I think it's a good insight on "woman empowerment", ie: it's 2013 and modern women can go after what they want (career) and it should be the same with dating. She is able to "go after" lower potentials because she's not that invested in them so if they reject her than at least she used her empowerment of going after what you want.
However when it comes to high potentials then she paralyzed like a traditional woman. Paralyzing in the sense she doesn't feel empowered or confident enough to "chase" him.
It's a big dilemma whether women should "chase" men and I'm not surprise if most women don't "chase" men she sees of high potential because she wants him to love her and she's probably not aiming for casual love but the REAL love. Thus why the dilemma, ie: as a woman if he's really interested in you and not just your body then he will keep being persistent in chasing you. What if she chased him? Then he could easily aim for the free milk instead of buying the cow.
I totally agree with you.
@WoozyMan "It's about a girl who has confidence getting guys she isn't that interested in. However when it comes to guys she's pretty interested in then all her confidence goes away as she doesn't know how to handle potentials she sees of high value. I think it's a good insight on "woman empowerment..."

I agree on your lyric interpretation. Only its not just women who feel this way and go thru this. Believe me. This is pretty much the story of my love life lol I've basically always had to settle for girls I haven't been super physically attracted to. And I think a lot of guys can relate, especially those of us who are a little shy, sensitive, introverted, self esteem issues, and/or socially awkward and have difficulty expressing ourselves verbally in social situations. Though maybe not a lot who are brave enough to put themselves out there and admit it. But I just see it as another aspect of the human condition, so I never saw what was particularly wrong with it and never saw it as strictly a "girl issue" or "guy issue". People aren't perfect and, deep down, I really believe men and women aren't that different. So I never got the point of gender roles, etc.

Anyway, I especially like the line: "When you come around, I get paralyzed. And every time I try to be myself, it comes out wrong like a cry for help. It’s just not fair, pain’s more trouble than love is worth. I gasp for air, it feels so good, but you know it hurts." Especially the part about "Every time I try to be myself, it comes out wrong like a cry for help." Which is probably me on the internet more times than I'd like to admit lol But yeah, it just goes back to that "difficulty expressing yourself socially" thing that can be part of the human condition for both males and females. Story of my (love)life lol

Finally, would just like to say that even though I'm a guy who's probably a bit older (39) than Demi's target music demo, I'm a recent fan of her music, I think she's really hot (curves - my kind of woman AKA the kind I can't talk to lol), and most importantly - I think she's a great inspiration to people everywhere the way she just kinda bravely puts her flaws out there. She's definitely inspired me in that way.

Ok, enough rambling...but I don't post here much at all, so I had a lot to get out of my system lol Just wanted to stick up for the flawed/awkward/misfit guys like me out there, as well as the flawed/awkward/misfit girls, since I see a lot of people on the net trying to be "alphas" or whatever, but not a lot of people trying to stick up for people like us. The other 99% or 1% or whatever the percentage is that's a little different from the herd (just like Demi). So hopefully someone reads this and feels less alone with what they're going thru :-)
