This is one of my favorite songs. https://fnfgo.io
They stored their passion in the creases in the corners of their mouths
Every angle of light from the open window washed their aged faces out
They said, "Should we feel guilty for this sin?
Lord, did we kill a man and woman just to lie here skin to skin?"
"I wasn't happy, I wasn't happy where I was
What is life without a purpose, what is purpose without love?
I pray my children will forgive me, though I bade the river flood.
I have washed my hands a thousand times but still can see the blood."
"Oh, great mercy, I am here to beg forgiveness for this mess.
I know I tore two worlds apart but I can't change the way I felt.
Love swept in like a storm and ripped the hinges from the doors.
Love poured in like a flood, I couldn't stop it anymore. I will not be drowned."
She said, "Lover, come and hold me, I am terribly afraid.
While you're shouting at the stars, my scars are not fading away."
He said, "Darling, I was begging heaven make them disappear, but,
See, I didn't get an answer or at least one I could hear.
Now, I am thinking of the past and how we both said vows and lied and
I am wondering how we trust ourselves to say a second time:
To have and to hold,
From this day and onward,
For better and for worse,
For richer and for poorer,
In sickness or in health,
To love and to cherish
Till death do us part?
Every angle of light from the open window washed their aged faces out
They said, "Should we feel guilty for this sin?
Lord, did we kill a man and woman just to lie here skin to skin?"
"I wasn't happy, I wasn't happy where I was
What is life without a purpose, what is purpose without love?
I pray my children will forgive me, though I bade the river flood.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Blue

Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Plastic Bag

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
could anyone explain this song to me? i doesn't get the first part. why did they kill two people? who were these people? thanks.
It's a metaphor. Two people who were already in a committed relationship with someone else both left their partners because they fell in love with each other. So, in order to gain their own happiness, they broke the hearts of two other people. For them to be together they had to really fucking hurt the people they were already committed to.
The whole song is just the stream-of-consciousness through the eyes of someone who left their partner for another person. It's about the guilt they feel for gaining happiness at the expense of their family.
They end up questioning themselves and the commitment of love. If they betrayed once, will they do it again with their new lover?
I fully agree with the above but would also add that the part, " love swept in like Storm" suggests that there was the absence of love already for you can't love two people at once unless the people are your children. However, respect is also a function of love albeit a brotherly love, and this song does a great job depicting such anguish...
This song was designed to come after New Storms For Old Lovers and Last Blues For Bloody Knuckles; it focuses on two couples in which one of each was unfaithful. The use of killing is metaphorical- it destroyed the original relationship.
