She phones home, composed, a bit panicked
Hesitates to confess she misses the Atlantic
The gulf streams, the palm trees, the car keys that took you away
She tries to explain, oh boy

I wanna be fixed, I wanna be broken
I wanna be closed, I wanna be open
The love I thought had died is still alive and I hope that you don't mind
Oh I,

She says December will help me remember
The place that my heart calls home
When the pale city lights are aglow
And my heart's feeling empty and cold
Well there's one place I know that I'm dying to be
Steel City, you'll always be a part of me

No, it's not what you said, and it's not how you said it
But it all came undone the moment you meant it
I honestly can't believe coincidence and possibility could sway
But I'll try and explain, baby

I wanna be fixed, I wanna be broken
I wanna be closed, I wanna be open
When stars and hearts align I'm sure you'll come to find the love we had was blind
Oh I,

She says December will help me remember
The place that my heart calls home
When the pale city lights are aglow
And my heart's feeling empty and cold
Well there's one place I know that I'm dying to be
Steel City, you'll always be a part of me

Searching for something you need
And as you fall to the floor you crawl to your knees
Reach out for something you see
It's like she was never there
You breath in and hold the air
Like an unanswered prayer

She says December will help me remember
The place that my heart calls home
When the pale city lights are aglow
And my heart's feeling empty and cold
Well there's one place I know that I'm dying to be
Steel City, you'll always
Steel City, you'll always
Steel City, you'll always be a part of me

i think this is basically a guy that was totally in love with this girl who randomly packed up and moved to west coast leaving him here in the east. he thought he was over her but he realizes hes not.

"I'm sure you'll come to find the love we had was blind" meaning he didnt realize what he had til it was gone.

and he remembers that she said that they would see eachother again in december in steel city, (pittsburgh)

and the chorus is saying that he wants to get over her but he doesnt want to forget her. 'I wanna be fixed i wanna be broken."

"Steel City" is a nickname for the City of Pittsburgh. So from the words, "I'm sure you'll come to find the love we had was blind", he probably means that the girl he met wasn't what he "should be dating". And he probably met her in Pittsburgh. So therefore, when he says "Steel City, you'll always be a part of me" he's probably referring to the fact that this girl most likely left him in Pittsburgh, and he'll always remember that. Both of them most likely spent a good amount of time there, probably during the winter, because he says "She says December will help me remember; The place that my heart calls home" And from all this, he's just broken and falling apart because of it, and wants to forget her but can't, and thinking of Pittsburgh probably makes him mourn for her, whoever this girl is.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
