The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I wish I knew you, way back when before you were a part of my plans,
I think that we would have been friends.
There's only time,to live our lives,
You'll be the one that's by my side.
And I can promise you, then you'll always be my best friend.
Till the end when we part, I will give you my heart,
And will promise to love you with all that it is,
And I will promise to be there whenever you need me,
Because you'll always be my best friend.
[Repeat: x4]
You'll always be my best friend
I think that we would have been friends.
There's only time,to live our lives,
You'll be the one that's by my side.
And I can promise you, then you'll always be my best friend.
Till the end when we part, I will give you my heart,
And will promise to love you with all that it is,
And I will promise to be there whenever you need me,
Because you'll always be my best friend.
[Repeat: x4]
You'll always be my best friend

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
i think its about your lover also being your best friend. no matter what happens she will always be that. and he wishes they were friends before they became a couple?
didnt know that relient k had such great songs that are unknown
wow. relient k is my favourite band!! my boyfriend and i love them!!!! XD. MustHaveDoneSomethingRight is our song :)
we were best friends for aaaaaaages before we confessed how we felt to eachother (and i'm talking years =P) and we always will be best friends :) wow.
this is mine and my bff's song
Love ya, banana!
I can relate to this. I was best friends with this guy and we just told each other that we really have wayy deeper feelings than friendship for each other...it feels great. So yeah, we were best friends befeore we confessed our feelings, and we will be best friends forever. At this age, not many people get the opportunity to find someone like that, but my best friend, david:), and i have that. We can be laughing together or crying together. we can have very deep conversations and we can talk about EVERYTHING. Nothing is ever awkward, and he's the best friend I've ever had. I'm so glad we found each other:)
"I wish I knew you way back when, before you were part of my plans. I think that we would have been friends." I think This is about God. Back before he knew about God, or really beleived, or had a real connection, he had no plans having to do with God. But he found God, and he's never letting him go. God will always be his best friend. "There's only time to live our lives, and you'll be the one who's by my side." God will always be by his side when he's living his life, and after he dies, God will be there, too. so there ya go. This band is a Christian band, so it makes sense.
I believe you couldn't have said it any better here. Songs are meant to mean different things to different people, but Relient K being the band they are I'm sure was offering this song to God himself.
this os my song with my bf :)) hes my best friend too :)) ily tony!!
i think this song is just about recognizing god in your life and how personal a relationship with god can be. i love how he makes it so simple. sometimes you don't realize it, but god is always there for you like a best friend
Alright lol, well i could be wrong but this is what i think the song is about.
if you look on Wikipedia, or that little booklet thing with the lyrics in it that you get with CDs it says that Matt H. co wrote it along with matt t. and ive heard matt t. say and have read many places that they have been best friends ever sense matt thiessen moved to canton when he was like 7. and hoopes is the one singing in the song. sooo i think its about them being best friends...but you know i could totaly be wrong...
Anyone with a best friend can relate to this song.
I can't relate.
Ha, too bad!
