In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Pulling down the blinds, blocks what's left of the
Stars
So I'm tripping over bottles, tracing footsteps in the
Dark
Tomorrow would be a great day for broken glass
There are men in this room, who would pay for this
Missed calls to say I missed the morning's most.
You can't talk about it, you can't talk about it
Keeping (we) secrets (we) playing (can't talk about it)
Witches
Our bodies stretched out, our bodies stretched out
Casting sudden spells is not the answer
We'll build ourselves on hope and progress
Wake in water says your eyes wide terrified
We'll build ourselves on hope and fortune
I wouldn't say
Wouldn't say it, to your face, I'm sure
Your life is a song, your life is a song
Your life is a song, but not this one
Your life is a song, your life is a song
Your life is a song, but not this one (SURE!)
It talks about confidence, I'll give it a month if I'm
Lucky
I'm not that lucky, and these t-shirts don't fold
Themselves
But he falls asleep on her shoulder
Every shift they spend together, which is most nights
You can't talk about it, you can't talk about it
Keeping (we) secrets (we) playing (can't talk about it)
Witches
Your bodies stretched out, our bodies stretched out
Casting sudden spells is not the answer
We'll build ourselves on hope and progress
Wake in water says your eyes wide terrified
We'll build ourselves on hope and something
I wouldn't say
Wouldn't say it, to your face, I'm sure
Your life is a song, your life is a song
Your life is a song, but not this one (SURE!)
Your life is a song, your life is a song
Your life is a song, but not this one
It talks about confidence, I'll give it a month if I'm
Lucky
You're jealous friends have gotta get laid
The only thing that's stopping you is more of the same
Yeah you get it, you feel it, emotions, attention
Your life is a song, your life is a song
Your life is a song, but not this one
Your life is a song, your life is a song
Your life is a song, but not this one
Your life is a song, your life is a song
Your life is a song, but not this one

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
El Clembo and Lanny are both right.
