"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
When the Sun comes up I can see that you're not here,
And the whole world stops ...
And the days go by and you don't come back
But I know you will there's a signal pulling both of us
Back in forth, up and down, all around
In and out of love and I've been holding on hold on for so long,
That I cant let you go
[Chorus]
Even when we're apart I can feel you next to me,
There's a hidden love connecting us like voices on a string
In the bottom of the Earth, in the middle of the day
You're the passing sunlight stay with me don't go away
I can hear you voice coming through the wire,
There's a silver spark connecting us and pulling me
Back in forth, up and down, all around
In and out of love and I've been holding on hold on for so long,
That I can't let you go
[Chorus]
Even when we're apart I can feel you next to me,
There's a hidden love connecting us like voices on a string
Even when you're not I can tell you're next to me,
There's a hidden love connecting us
And I'm holding on, holding on by a string
Back in forth, up and down, in and out all around
Back in forth, up and down, in and out all around this love
[Chorus]
Even when we're apart I can feel you next to me,
There's a hidden love connecting us
I'm holding on, holding on by a string
And the whole world stops ...
And the days go by and you don't come back
But I know you will there's a signal pulling both of us
Back in forth, up and down, all around
In and out of love and I've been holding on hold on for so long,
That I cant let you go
[Chorus]
Even when we're apart I can feel you next to me,
There's a hidden love connecting us like voices on a string
In the bottom of the Earth, in the middle of the day
You're the passing sunlight stay with me don't go away

There's a hidden love connecting us
I'm holding on, holding on by a string

Its about someone he loves, and even when they're not together he feels like they're connected. Like when you're a kid and you take two cups and put a string in them and talk to your friends across the room.
