This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart

Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. It's a tragic topic but the way he tells the story it kinda makes it seem like she does this so often that he's done being upset and right now he's just hopeful and wondering. He's not gonna get too upset but he wants her back. Kinda just like he's thinking to himself "hmm, gone again because things got tough, I see? Oh well, maybe she'll come back soon" and he goes on with his life.

I think it's a story about a guy who wants to settle down and she keeps leaving because she's not quite ready, but comes back because she doesn't want to not have this oppurtunity when she is ready. This is backed up the most by the line, "She's got the blond hair, but not the blue eyes. I've got the right girl at the wrong time." Meaning she's beautiful and he really likes her, but she's not ready for something so serious.
I'm not sure if anyone noticed this because I think they would have pointed it out by now, but this is very very clever and catchy.
