In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Rule one, is hang up your phone, because if you knew what's next, you'd never chase another dream again.
All you wanted was an answer, not just to suffer. Who are you weighing down?
All you wanted was the offer, not just to suffer. And it's not the end.
Rule 6 is to hold that tongue. Because you're fucked if you forget: rules 3 and 4 and 5 were made by them.
All you wanted was an answer, not just to suffer. Who are you weighing down?
All you wanted was the offer, not just to suffer.
But down the road, you'll want to shut me out instead. Right.
You'll want to shut me out. You'll fit in real well.
Successful. Shock the world. But you'll never learn.
People: units sold. You can drop the role.
Let's call us what we are now.

Magical

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Plastic Bag

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
No comments? Hmm possibly my favorite song by these guys. Love it love it love it. To me, just wanting an answer and not to suffer means that, you are confused about aspects or a relationship or there is a lack of clarity. So you call the other person to finally discuss it after a long period of discomfort and suffering, and the response is what you were fearing and not hoping for. The other person decides to move on, you feel shut out.
Very good song. Reminiscent of Hot Water Music, No Division, but with a faster, harder sound.
The song is about ditching your friends for the "cool kids" basically. Im guessing the "cool kids" are someone famous. This is either from the band's perspective about someone else, or from someone else's perspective about them.
mh...if it wasn't for the title, I would definitely say this song talks about trying to get signed. Does that make sense to you guys? You just want an offer, you just want a response from those who are supposed to listen to your music and give you a chance, and you end up suffering...don't know...it really sounded something like that. also the sentence "you'd never chase another dream again" I understod the dream as the dream of doing something with your music. what do you think?
Agree with darkpunkguy. The last lines are a reality check:

People: units sold
You can drop the role
Let's call us what we are now
