[Verse 1]

How did we ever go this far?
You touch my hand and start the car
Now for the first time in my life
I'm crying

Are we in space? Do we belong?
Some place where no one calls it wrong
And like the stars we burn away
For miles

[Chorus]

How did we ever get this far?
It shouldn't have to be this hard
Now for the first time in my life
I'm flying

Are we in love? Do we deserve?
To bear the shame of the whole world
And like the night we camouflage
Denial

[Rap]

[Chorus]

How did we ever get this far?
It shouldn't have to be this hard
Now for the first time in my life
I'm flying

Are we in love? Do we deserve?
To bear the shame of the whole world
And like the night we camouflage
Denial

To me its about being in a safe place to be free and be able to do anything. Even if it's "forbidden" love and I don't mean this just in a homosexual sense. People in history have been forbidden to love each other for many reasons.

Also, I went to a website that had the translation to the Russian Rap and it's just a bunch of random things that possibly depict all the pain and sufferring and drama they went through in life.

So to me I liked the way this song was structured. It's like through the Russian Rap they are going through the crap of their life, struggling to be.

And then when the soft singing starts, they are at peace and in a safe place with each other.

Peace is not an easy feeling to find. And when you do find it, its not easy to hold onto, like a keepsake.

Anyway, that's the way I see it.

    Know what I mean?

this song is about two (hott) chicks who are friends to begin with and realize they have deeper feelings for eachother...when things start getting sexual, they start to have doubts whether what they did was right...but they leave it up to the stars................my favorite song on this EXCELLENT CD!!!!!

I think that the song is not so much just about two girls, but really any two gay people, men or women, who have found that they are in love with someone else, and who fear what others will think. I always thought the song said "to BEAR the shame of this whole earth." this makes sense b/c they feel afraid and sad that everyone thinks that their love is wrong.

It's a beautiful tune, and I agree with your synopsis of the song.

One correction to the lyrics though, it's 'to BEAR the shame of this whole world' as opposed to build the shame....

    But again a great tune

i agree with chino69. it's barely about falling in love with another girl or person, and getting into all of it. it's more about when you're already in this big mess, you wonder if it's worth it or not. and in the russian rap, more of how troubling and hard it is.

does anyone know the translation of the russian rap? I would love to know what they're saying there, but I'm afraid I'm an ignorant American who was never taught any other languages other than "taco, burrito, y frijoles, por favor, gracias". anyone? anyone? T.T

I think it's about any two people who's love is resticted not just gays and lesbians.

I also agree with Chino69 because this is about a Forbidden love...like Crashingstar79 says not just gay people...and these lovers escaping to a place where "No one calls it wrong" I love this song it is amazing ((im not to crazy about the Russain Rap though i might be if i knew what it meant))

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
