The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Three in the morning and I gotta be someplace
I don't remember where
Friends try to make me stay or call me a cab home
I grab my keys and a beer
The cops they took my license away
But I got my car out of impound today
And I've been drunk since last Saturday
You'd better stay outta my way
I drink and drive
Feel so alive
I'm doin' ninety-five
I drink and drive
I feel so alive
I drink and drive
Early morning and the freeway's deserted
Like it's all mine
I'm trying to set a new drunken speed record
But I can't drive a straight line
Flashing lights
Split the night I'm tossing bottles as I swerve to the right
Now I've slammed my face into the back of a big-rig
At least you'll never catch me you fucking pigs
Designate someone other than me
I'm so drunk I can hardly see
Another shot of jager and I turn the key
I got so many places to be
I drink and drive
Feel so alive
I'm doin' ninety-five
I drink and drive
I feel so alive
I drink and drive
When I'm on a binge, my friends all cringe
They won't drive at night
Cause down at the freeway it's such a fright
But I think I drive alright
The cops they took my license away
But I got my car out of impound today
And I've been drunk since last Saturday
You'd better stay outta my way
I drink and drive
Feel so alive
I'm doin' ninety-five

Fast Car

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
Mostly right, but the chorus is off. It should read like this.
Might drink and drive! Feel so alive Never take that dive Feel so alive Doin' 95 Might drink and drive Feel so alive Might drink and drive
Also, the third line in the fourth stanza should be
Trying to set a new driving speed record
Lastly, Cops they took my license away Got my car out of impound today I've been drunk since last Saturday Better stay outta my way
I was wondering if Green Day did a cover of this song on their new album, Shenannigans......who sings it, if they did??
green day's one is no cover - it's way better than this - it's all done by tre and it's as good as dominated love slave and all by myslef - and it's the same subject as this. greenday.net has it to d/l
this song was the only thing that kept me sane(ish) when on holiday in menorca. boring as fuck.
green dave. Green Day sucks ass now. The offsprings D.U.I. is so much better
I noticed /\/\/\/\ that post was from 2k3.
I would've agreed with you last year, but now, I think Green Day is back and kicking ass again. At least George Bush has done one thing good...
sing to yourself the tune of the chorus of P.O.D's "alive" with the words to the chorus of this song. Funny huh?
good song, the only one Noodles wrote
Green Day's DUI sounds very strange and reminds me of Austrian folk music. That's pretty weird... I like both songs, and I don't think one of the bands is better than the other!
Green Day doesn't suck, you idiots.
