They say we're young and we don't know
We won't find out until we grow
Well, I don't know if all that's true
'Cause you got me, and baby, I got you

Babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe

They say our love won't pay the rent
Before it's earned, our money's all been spent
I guess that's so, we don't have a plot
But at least I'm sure of all the things we got

Babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe

I got flowers in the spring
I got you to wear my ring
And when I'm sad, you're a clown
And if I get scared, you're always around

Don't let them say your hair's too long
'Cause I don't care, with you I can't go wrong
Then put your little hand in mine
There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb

Babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe

I got you to hold my hand
I got you to understand
I got you to walk with me
I got you to talk with me
I got you to kiss goodnight
I got you to hold me tight
I got you, I won't let go
I got you to love me so

I got you, babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe
I got you, babe

Why the hell has this song not got any comments prior to mine?! It's a classic!!!

I love everything about it - the lyrics are adorable, and the music is all jangly and 60's-like (that's technical terminoligy you don't see every day ladies and gentleman!)

Watching them perform it as a duet is even cuter - Cher ruffles Sonny's hair as she sings the line "Let them say your hair's too long..."

I guess you have to have seen it...

There probably aren't many comments cause people are looking for this song under "Sonny & Cher" and not just "Cher".

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
