Doomtree – If & When Lyrics | 10 years ago |
The narrator seems so desperate--so hinged on the need for her husband to return home. She depends on his return, so much that she'll kill herself to be the "beacon in the snow." Overall beautiful, if not a little heartrending. |
Buddy Wakefield – Convenience Stores Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I've listened to this song so many times, and it still gives me goosebumps each time. The meaning is straightforward, but Buddy weaves a beautiful, heartbreaking story. "Is this it for you? Is this all you'll ever do?" Speaking from someone who works minimum wage in a dying town, this strikes home with a lot of people I know/work with. I look at them, slaving away at entry level positions, getting no raises and having no motivation to move up in the world. I want to ask them if that's all they ever see themselves doing--but I know sometimes, you just have to survive. Dreams are a luxury we can't all afford. |
Mac Lethal – Wooooo!!! Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I'm pretty sure "Alexis Coop" should be "a Lexus coupe." As in, an expensive car. |
Arrah and the Ferns – Waterproof Gold Watch Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Very obviously about being "the other woman." The only question I really have is what the final verse means. Was losing herself regret about the affair, or regret about telling the wife? And I thought the phrase "I clipped my nails" was odd--why send her fingernails? The only thing I can think of are biting one's nails in nervousness. |
Lee Brice – A Woman Like You Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I'm not super into country music, but this song is adorable :) |
Jewel – Till It Feels Like Cheating Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think it's about a couple(married, probably), with kids, trying to put the spark back into their relationship. At first glance, I actually thought it was about her cheating, but judging by the lyrics, I don't think so. "I got a bottle of wine Some stolen time Key to a room where you can be all mine" Getting some romance in, maybe in a hotel room, because their lives are so busy they barely have time for each other. "Keeping the spark going is an everyday fight So I sent the kids to your mama And baby, we got all night" Grandma babysitting so the parents can get some sexy time xD I'm not married, but I can imagine after years of marriage, kids, jobs, and hectic schedules, it can be hard to have time for each other. And between being tired, juggling bills, working, taking care of kids, and growing older, it's probably hard to keep the spark going. My closest experience with cheating was falling in love with my fiance. Was in a relationship at the time, and before I broke up with my ex, it felt like cheating, thinking about someone else. I'm guessing actual cheating feels exciting/dangerous. Just read a book where the main character cheats on her husband, and there is an addiction, trying to get close to the man, and a sense of fulfillment getting what she wants. Anyway, I'm guessing that's the feeling she means by "feels like cheating." A total sense of abandonment for responsibilities, a *need* to have the other person, and "making promises life won't let us keep." |
Arrah and the Ferns – All the Bad in One Place Lyrics | 11 years ago |
The text in brackets are lyrics I wasn't sure of. Suggestions are welcome :) |
Arrah and the Ferns – Life Lessons Lyrics | 11 years ago |
And I know it's hard to feel your own heart Maybe it's best that I avoid the rest 'Cuz it's hot So hot Rest should be west, I believe. It sounds like west, and it would make sense (the west is hot). And I wish nothing but the very best for you my love And all of your endeavors I ...?... that are clever, oh whoa Maybe we will meet again on one of foreign coast we'll then Speak of her and legends and share ...?... life lessons that we've learned I believe it is: And all of your endeavors [i.e. these] that are clever, oh whoa Maybe we will meet again on one of foreign coast [with them] Speak of her and legends and share [music and] life lessons that we've learned The second line is a guess for me...I just listened to it like ten times and I'm still not sure. xD |
Arrah and the Ferns – Bernadette Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"You are the only one that matters And the only one who knows Every inch of my perimeter From my fingers to my toes" I love this. Just complete comfort between the two, and love. Makes me think of two people laying in bed, naked and entangled, but it's not even sexual. They just want to know each other. In general, I think it's about jumping the hurdle and not being afraid to be vulnerable with this person. The paranoia about pets and wondering if she'll be alive tomorrow might represent fear about fleeting nature of life and love. |
Arrah and the Ferns – Southern Comfort Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Oh my...my comment was super long xD |
Arrah and the Ferns – Southern Comfort Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I originally thought this was about suicide, but I also like the ideas you guys suggested. Support for suicide: "Cause I don't want to be your burden I don't want you to worry for me Just know it will better now It will be better we all will agree" The feeling suicidal people get when they think everyone will be happier without them. Mental illness(usually what prompts suicide) can feel like a burden to loved ones. I've been in that position, and it's expensive and difficult. "You won't have to waste your empathy You can do whatever you want" Once again, the warped perception from mental illness. Empathy feels like a waste on someone so hopeless and helpless, and they view their loved ones as better off with them dead. "You can try if you want you can build me a house" Building a house is a big undertaking; narrator is talking about how useless the attempts are at trying to keep him/her here. "But don't cry when I go when you knew that I would It's out of your hands, I'm trying to leave, let me go" Maybe the narrator voiced thoughts of suicide. When feeling helpless, sometimes control over your life is the last thing you have ("it's out of your hands"), and leaving is all that seems like a viable option. "When you go to meet your Maker When you go to cut your ties" Euphemisms for death. "But don't you know that you are living You are living inside a lie When you know it could be better here It could be better if you'd just try" A loved one trying to convince them it's worth it to try to get better. Suicide is a lie: it won't make things better, and there is always a reason to go on. "I want you to know the consequence When you leave this world alone" Leaving alone could mean the person is leaving by himself/herself, but it could also mean they're leaving the world alone(without them). Suicide is considered a sin, and it also wreaks havoc on the loved ones, hence the "consequence." "I won't try anymore; I won't build you a house Won't cry when you leave; I know that you're weak I did all that I could, you know I tried to give you a reason" Loved one giving up. Suicide is considered weak. The loved one tried to give them a reason to stay. "So you can die if you want, you can do what you please But remember the ones that have to bury the seeds Just know when you go, you place death upon every life Loved one saying that it's their choice, but it will affect others. Remember the people who have to pick up the pieces when you kill yourself. Suicide also usually leads others to follow; if someone you know commits suicide, you're more likely to do so. (Not sure of where I heard that, but I've seen it in several places and it makes sense) Break-up "I'll be sure to fill it with imagery And I'll be sure to be sincere" Trying to just be friends? Maybe they loved each other, but drifted apart or just can't work together, but he wants to stay friends. "Cause I don't want to be your burden I don't want you to worry for me Just know it will better now It will be better we all will agree" This break-up is good for both of us, it's necessary. I don't want to bring you down or hurt you anymore. "When I don't have to be so many things When I don't have to be a son You won't have to waste your empathy You can do whatever you want" Being so many things=the strain a relationship can have on someone, from the responsibilities to the hurt that most relationships give. You can do whatever you want=find someone new, move on...maybe bitter about it? "You can try if you want you can build me a house But don't cry when I go when you knew that I would It's out of your hands, I'm trying to leave, let me go" It only takes one person to end a relationship. One wants to leave, but the other won't let go. "I'll write you one last letter I'll tie it to a string I'll hang it from a lantern For you to find in New Orleans" A love letter? Tying to a string=letting it float away, or maybe the words will tie them together? New Orleans=moving away, starting new life? "When you know it could be better here It could be better if you'd just try" We don't have to end. We can make this work. One person trying to keep them together. "I did all that I could, you know I tried to give you a reason" I tried to give you a reason to stay with me. Just the feeling of helplessness and frustration after giving a relationship everything and it still failing. "So you can die if you want, you can do what you please But remember the ones that have to bury the seeds Just know when you go, you place death upon every life" Death=metaphor for relationship dying. Seeds=new life? Maybe the seeds were the promise for what they had, and the burying them is recognizing they're dead OR hoping they'll grow. Religion/Jesus "Cause I don't want to be your burden I don't want you to worry for me" Someone praying for the narrator's salvation. I felt like a burden when my Grandma was around. She would always try to get me to church, and prayed for me in hopes that I'd change. (I did, but after she was already gone) "When I don't have to be so many things When I don't have to be a son" Parent trying to save son, son feels stretched thin and can't change. "You won't have to waste your empathy You can do whatever you want" You can stop worrying about me, stop praying for me, stop trying to figure out why I am this way. "When you go to meet your Maker When you go to cut your ties When you go to drown in the water That springs eternal life" Religious references(Maker, cutting ties, baptism, Heaven). Cutting ties=umbilical cord cut, relationship with parent is cut. "But don't you know that you are living You are living inside a lie" The earthly world is a lie compared to the Heaven that awaits us. "When you know it could be better here It could be better if you'd just try" You could be happy and saved if you would try. "I want you to know the consequence When you leave this world alone" In death, the person will suffer the consequences for rejecting Jesus, especially by sinning through suicide. "So you can die if you want, you can do what you please" Parent giving up; death is the worst thing they can do, and saying that is showing how much the parent is just giving up on their child. "Just know when you go, you place death upon every life" Death on every life=refusal to accept Jesus is killing parent. Hope it's not too sloppy, I'm getting sleepy but I wanted to finish this before I went to bed :P Like I said, some valid interpretations. I definitely think it's a conversation, with the male being the one killing himself/breaking up with her/not accepting Jesus and the female putting together the pieces when he lets her down. Great song, super sad. I've been on both sides for all of the interpretations, so my personal experiences may have colored my thoughts. |
Lupe Fiasco – I Don't Wanna Care Right Now Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This definitely has a different sound from a lot of Lupe's other music. It's really hard for me to listen to this, regardless of how solid the actual lyrics are. |
Lupe Fiasco – Letting Go Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It says in the song "I don't get high, life keep me at a decent height." I'm not super informed about all the metaphors for different drugs, but that strikes me as saying he doesn't do them. Or do you mean in general and not specific to drugs? |
Cecil Otter – Sufficiently Breathless Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I'm pretty sure it's "pussy footsteps" in the first stanza. At least that's what I've always thought. |
Arrah and the Ferns – Preteens Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I wondered at why this had so many comments compared to the others, but then I giggled when I saw the reason why :) |
Sadistik – November Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The first time I heard this song, I broke down and cried. It's so beautiful and emotionally raw. |
Eyedea & Abilities – Bottle Dreams Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I cannot listen to this song without tearing up. |
Ani DiFranco – Lost Woman Song Lyrics | 14 years ago |
They said THE father, meaning the father of the fetus. |
The Ropes – Heaven on Stilts Lyrics | 14 years ago |
You get into a relationship with someone, and you think they're this wonderful person. Time passes, and you realize they're really...not. You bought into their lies, and then some day, it crumbles, and they fall off their stilts. And you're left wishing they were this ideal person you came up with. |
The Ropes – I Don't Like To Get Dirty Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I feel like it's not the "usual emo-iamnotlikeyou-iamsodeepbysayingiwanttodie-song" just because of the humor in not killing herself because she doesn't want to get dirty. Oh yes, my life is so empty and horrible that I want to die, buuuuuut, I won't, just because I don't want to get dirty. And come on? "You can all go fuck yourselves." That just makes me giggle :D |
The Ropes – Cry to the Beat Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Heartbreak, listening to music, missing them, thinking of the good memories. Love it! |
The Ropes – Civil Lanterns Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This has a definite violent mob chasing someone feel. |
The Ropes – Be my Gun Lyrics | 14 years ago |
But is the potential really good? Some of the language (warning, set me loose, building up, the fact that she's portrayed as a bullet) kind of strike as negative to me. |
The Ropes – A Lot You Can Learn in a Room Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The general feeling I get from this is that you can learn a lot about human nature just from living. Yes, she hasn't "seen the world," but just being in her room, hanging out with friends who would "pay anything to see me fail," she's learned a lot. |
of Montreal – Your Magic Is Working Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The peppy happy musical form of new love. It makes me dance around :D |
The Magnetic Fields – Is This What They Used To Call Love? Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Love gone bad? |
Bright Eyes – Pull My Hair Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is so goddamn sexy! :D |
The Magnetic Fields – The One You Really Love Lyrics | 14 years ago |
From the beginning "our love's in danger," this doesn't seem like it's from the point of view of a secret admirer, but more of someone in a relationship. I don't know whether the corpse part is literal(perhaps an ex that passed away?) or simply the one you love longing for someone in their past. And sherbear, I hadn't even thought about that! That's an interesting idea. |
The Magnetic Fields – Too Drunk To Dream Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Love this song, if you couldn't guess by the name. ;) |
Pavement – Heaven Is A Truck Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"Loosen my dress Tie me up just like all the rest" Beyond the possibility of this being an invitation to kinky sex, it kind of makes me think of how you can be "tied" to someone by being in a relationship with them. |
The Magnetic Fields – When You're Old And Lonely Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The feel of this to me is someone telling someone else all these things they could have had, had they chosen to be with this person. But they chose not to, and now all they can do is call someone to say "I told you so" when they're alone. |
The Magnetic Fields – With Whom to Dance Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"And you, you look like heaven An angel who stepped from a dream Seven hundred and seventy-seven times lovelier than anything I've ever seen" :D |
