Waterproof Gold Watch Lyrics

We will lay here in the dark
I put my hands on the small of your back
you look to me and then you say
"I think it's getting late"
I don't care if you have things on your mind
as long as you have time
on your waterproof gold watch
I don't care if you have two kids at home
and a wife on the phone saying
"Where have you been?"
Oh, where have you been?

I will lay atop the sheets after you leave
I'm staring at the ceiling
my only friend's a parakeet
I watch her eat
I know you think I'm crazy
So you have got a three bedroom house and a-
two leather couches
but I can't stay over
So it seems as though the king has it made
with his two queens to lay with
and two beds to make
oh, two beds to make

I clipped my nails in an envelope sealed
to another man's wife
And I wrote those words as a sonnet to be heard
when you're leaving her at night
If I knew her well then time would only tell
until she's telling you to go
If I know you at all then it's me that gets the call
you will give her stones to throw

I lost myself
I did not mean
to go beyond
the thought

Very obviously about being "the other woman." The only question I really have is what the final verse means. Was losing herself regret about the affair, or regret about telling the wife? And I thought the phrase "I clipped my nails" was odd--why send her fingernails? The only thing I can think of are biting one's nails in nervousness.
