Hole – Reasons to Be Beautiful Lyrics | 7 months ago |
@[DeliciousDemon:48347] It's nearly a decade later and man, listening to this song just now I had the same realization. So many lines are extremely creepy and damning when read through that lens, especially the last verse. Select lines: "When the fire goes out you better learn to fake" Courtney was never a particularly good songwriter—everyone knows about Cobain's influence on the last album and it was widely reported that Corgan significantly wrote this one. That professional and social insecurity lends some explanatory power to the following... "It's better to rise than fade away." Obviously referring to herself in contrast to him. He's dead, she made it. "Did you freeze? Did you weep?" When whomever it was pulled that shotgun on him, she's wondering how he reacted. Probably the most disturbing line (if interpreted this way). "Turn to gold, baby sleep" His death granted her the rights to his music and money. The rest of the verse sounds like she's expressing some guilt but also but also justifying it; like it was something she *had* to do for herself and her ambitions. |
The National – Sin-Eaters Lyrics | 6 years ago |
@[senorhughes:26195] I think it's saying the opposite, really. The song is eloquently but angrily pointing out that it was the bankers and power elite that knowingly brought about the housing crisis and then pretended they were completely ignorant of it. And they got away with it. No one was ever prosecuted despite the thousands upon thousands that lost their homes and even more who lost their jobs. The last part has quiete, almost unintelligible lyrics, but from what I can put together he is saying, "set your houses to the flames/we can live inside the banks." |

Pixies – Velouria Lyrics | 11 years ago |
She's spelling out the word "veloria." "vee-eee-el-oh-yoo-are-eye-ayyy" |
The Walkmen – French Vacation Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Hmm, this is how I've always interpreted these lyrics: I've left my friend Our train came in on time But he never showed up Well he speaks french he is fine alone Where did you go? Where did you go? I should have known I should have known Hey, I'm glad you've finally caught up Just to get around It's been a drag on my own Hey where'd you go? I remember when our plans were to meet at home You made it home Where'd you go? Where'd you go? As you can see, I think this song is quite literally about some guys on a vacation in France who accidentally leave their friend behind, only to have him catch up later on. The implied fraternalism in the song makes sense, considering most of band's members met while attending an elite DC prep school. Such establishments encourage very insular, familial like bonds between classmates. It's one of the ways they consolidate power and maintain that aforementioned eliteness. But anyway, I think the fact that the song is about something so benign makes it really unique. It may be just the recounting of completely inconsequential event, but it's performed with a ton of wistfulness. That delivery would make sense if the song was reflecting on it in the preterite, but being instead that it wavers between both present and past tenses, it makes it all the more charming. Pretty smart song. |
Medicine – the pink Lyrics | 13 years ago |
the way the tempo gradually speeds up for the last minute and a half is awesome. |
The National – Lit Up Lyrics | 13 years ago |
sounds like it's just about partying in the city. |
The National – Guest Room Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i thought it was more of a willful blindness thing. "tie your woman to your wrist" as if to say, hold on to her, keep faithful etc...but the next line is "give her room to tie the other"suggesting that she will inevitably have an extramarital affair or remain close someone she's secretly in love with. pretty despressing when you love someone and you know they're going to be unfaithful. fits with the mood of sad resignation throughout the song. |
Cursive – The Radiator Hums Lyrics | 14 years ago |
DIVORCE |
Animal Collective – For Reverend Green Lyrics | 16 years ago |
the line is "a thousand wasted brooklyners all depressed". animal collective is from brooklyn but recently relocated to their original home of baltimore. thus, there are a number anti-NYC lines on this record. |
Saves the Day – Nebraska Bricks Lyrics | 17 years ago |
you know, i really used to like this song when i was a teenager, and i could make the argument that it is my favorite saves the day song. but the other day i re-listened to the the can't slow down album after so many years and i noticed that this song still sticks out head and shoulders above the rest...but in the most suspect way. the lyrics to this song are far too well written and completely out of step stylistically with the rest of the album. they're subtle, clever, poetic and void of any of the awkward teenage histrionics that plague the other songs on the record. i'd really like to believe that chris wrote them himself, but i feel it's more likely that he borrowed heavily from another source. |
The Shins – Pam Berry Lyrics | 17 years ago |
is this song about THE pam berry? (black tambourine, glo-worm) anyone know? black tambourine is one my favorite bands of all time... |
Band of Horses – The Funeral Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"such a pretty song" you say? well, it should be, since they ripped off a beach boys riff. listen to the gorgeous vocal harmony at the end of "surf's up". it's the main melody of this song. l.a.m.e. |
Spiritualized – Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space Lyrics | 18 years ago |
the lyrics are fine and all, but come on, we all know the real beauty of this song is the little *beep* that sounds regularly, indicating that we are, in fact, floating in space. |
Pinback – AFK Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this song is alright but the ending line "i miss you, not in a slint way" is what really made me say "oh wow" if you've ever listened to slint's record "spiderland", specifically the final track "good morning captain" you'd understand why. |
Knapsack – Katherine the Grateful Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i always thought the line was "and no one can love you like father and i do". i always thought it was sung from the perspective of "katherine's" loving older brother as she goes through a tough time with school/life etc. i think it makes more sense that way. |
Low – Words Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i just finished watching both entire seasons of twin peaks and then listened to this song and it makes it even more haunting. i think it fits most david lynch projects. what it's about? who knows, but it's weird and good. |
Modest Mouse – A Life of Arctic Sounds Lyrics | 18 years ago |
the "Life of Arctic Sounds" 7" was put out a year after the "This a Long Drive..." LP, but the song was probably written around the same time. |
The National – Mr. November Lyrics | 18 years ago |
actually, this song has nothing to do with the president. it's about being under pressure while recording this album. reggie jackson was known as "mr. october" because he always saved his best for last, aka at the end of the season, so "mr. november" is his way of saying he's saving his best effort for last. i think i read that this song was actually the last one written for this record. the line "the english are waiting and i don't know what to do" is in reference to their label, beggar's banquet, which is a uk based label. |
The National – Abel Lyrics | 19 years ago |
There's a line missing where he says "You turn me ______ god fearing. Now tell me what am I supposed to do with that? I'm missing something I'm missing something. My mind's gone loose inside its shell." Maybe it was left out of the liner notes or something. |
Architecture in Helsinki – Fumble Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I\'ve always had a thing for cute, naive pop songs about sex. |
Unrest – Make Out Club Lyrics | 19 years ago |
You know, it's a goddamn shame that the only thing this incredible and influential DC indie pop band is remembered for amongst people under the age of 23 is the fact that that retarded fucking website was named after this song. Unrest deserves better. |
TV on the Radio – Blind Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Hey thanks for submitting the wrong lyrics I really appreciate it. |
Pixies – Bam Thwok Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Unfortunately, this song is very underwhelming. |
Pixies – Nimrod's Son Lyrics | 19 years ago |
YOU ARE THE SON OF A MOTHER FUCKER. Haha...literally. |
Pixies – Gigantic Lyrics | 19 years ago |
THIS SONG IS ABOUT A BIG BLACK COCK. And I love it for that. |
Pixies – Alec Eiffel Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I like how that horrible band the Get Up Kids completely took a shit all over this song. What a bunch of tools. |
Pixies – The Holiday Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Seriously though what the fuck was up with Frank Black's obsession with incest? He mentions it all the time. |
Pixies – Debaser Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think you guys are reading way too much into it. Like most Pixies songs, they're lyrically just jibberish. I read an interview once where Frank Black said he added the parts about Un Chien Andalou because he liked it and wanted to sound pretentious and weird. Not much else to it. |
Pixies – Velouria Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Before clicking on this link I thought to myself "I bet anything that the first comments are all going to mention that horrible Weezer cover" Sadly, I was right. |
Guided by Voices – Echos Myron Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Guided by Voices were never famous, much less at the time they released this song. |
Jawbreaker – In Sadding Around Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is about the problems he was having with his vocal chords. |
Jawbreaker – Accident Prone Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I always thought this was about the time when he developed a tumor on his vocal chords and had to get operated on. I know for a fact that "In Sadding Around" is about that. Blake brings it up multiple times in various songs. |
Jawbreaker – Shirt Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I paid like 30 bucks 4 years ago for an original copy of Dear You and then they go and re-release it >=(. Anyway, I think the version recorded on the live record is better than the version on the Dear You re-release. |
Jawbreaker – Boxcar Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Are these kids serious? Chances are they're all under the age of 17 with absolutely no perspective. The Ataris can't come close to the impact and relevancy that Jawbreaker had and still has on modern rock. |
French Kicks – The Trial of a Century Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Ah, my favorite French Kicks song. |
Pavement – Silence Kid Lyrics | 19 years ago |
What the hell is "Silence Kid"? |
Modest Mouse – Float On Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I get the distinct impression that the majority of the complaining about Modest Mouse becoming popular is coming from 16 and 17 year olds who think stuff like Bright Eyes is profound. I've been listening to the band since 97 or 98 and I'm not bothered at all that they're receiving some success. Keep in mind Modest Mouse has been on a major label for like 5 years now. This isn't new. |
The Microphones – I Want To Be Cold Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Great song. I like how it opens with chaos and roars on for 3/4 of the song before it collapses on its own weight and the only thing left standing is Phil's voice, a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar, some piano twinkling and the line "I hope your flames dont grow, I want to be buried in snow". Very nicely done. |
The Microphones – You'll Be in the Air Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I think he says "when I wake up your cat will pounce on me, I'll meet the day" |
The Microphones – The Moon Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I'm prety sure Phil is celebate. He seems like the kind of guy that would be, anyway. |
Mirah – Sweepstakes Prize Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I'm pretty sure this is a cover. Does anyone know who originally wrote/performed this song? |
Mirah – Pollen Lyrics | 20 years ago |
At first I thought this song was about cocaine, but now I realize it is about cunnilingus. Also, someone should set pitchforkmedia.com on fire. |
Mirah – After You Left Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I like Mirah's synth-pop oriented songs and I wish she and Phil Elvrum would explore them more. Good stuff. |
Mirah – Mt. St. Helens Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This is probably my favorite Mirah song. Yes it's probably about sex. ...like all of her songs. Oh, and ugly-girl, I doubt this is about a guy. Mirah is a lesbian. |
Mirah – Make It Hot Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The great thing about Mirah is that she sounds so sweet and innocent, but all her songs are about SEX |
Interpol – Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down Lyrics | 21 years ago |
well she was my catatonic sex toy love drug diver she went down down down there into the sea she went down down down there down there for me Haha. Sexy. |
I Hate Myself – To A Husband At War Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I'm totally there, thelonehellion. |
Avril Lavigne – Sk8er Boi Lyrics | 21 years ago |
A few humorous observations: "Five years from now, she sits at home Feeding the baby she's all alone " Does that mean they got it on, and she dumped him afterward, leaving the a bastard child in its wake? I sure hope so. "She turns on tv Guess who she sees Skater boy rockin' up MTV." I love how our favorite punk rock princess inserts MTV into her songs. That's as much of an indication of punk rockedness as loose neckties, right? "now he's a super star slamin' on his guitar" If that line isn't an OBVIOUS indicator that this song was written by an out of touch 30-to-40-something year old professional song writer, then I don't know what is. Who the fuck says "I was totally slammin' on my guitar!"? Yeah. SLAMMIN! |
Death Cab for Cutie – Photobooth Lyrics | 21 years ago |
