Green River – This Town Lyrics 13 years ago
The rest of the album is excellent, even if this is the best song. "Unwind" is so great. The lyrics to this are so clever though, once you really listen to them. "Passing your town, I head straight to that junction for Hell. I won't bother to pick you up -- you'll get there all by yourself." He's saying he wants to give her Hell, but he knows she'll go there when she dies anyway. Genius, says I!

The Doors – My Eyes Have Seen You Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about a model, or a porn star or actress who's been photographed naked. Jim has been with her and knows her personally, rather than just knowing what she is infamous for. He sees her going about her daily life, "free from disguise," and he also sees her fix her hair to appear on camera, and let them photograph her soul, or most intimate parts. "Memorize your alleys on an endless roll," is the line that gives it away -- it's a roll of film, endlessly making records of all her body's alleys which Jim may or may not have known in person.

The Doors – L'america Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't think it has much to do with Vietnam. Keep in mind it's LAmerica, on an album called LA Woman, right after a song called LA Woman. L.A.merica. I would imagine this is another ode to Los Angeles in some way...and describes either gambling, or some sort of drug deal or prostitution taking place.

I think it's

"Life is what you make it...and if you make it death well then rest your soul."

The Doors – The Crystal Ship Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's just a break-up song--he wants one more flashing chance at bliss with this girl before she goes to sleep because in the morning he's leaving. He intends to go back to her once he's experienced other things in life (the thousand girls and thrills) and when he's done with all that he hopes she'll be waiting for him. The crystal ship strikes me as a drug reference but it could be other things--apparently there's an oil rig off of Sand's beach called the crystal ship that inspired the song.

Soundgarden – Bleed Together Lyrics 14 years ago
Thought he was saying "We can make it together" at first.

Very cool song - the lyrics border on being negative but the way he sings it is so uplifting and awesome. I think it's just about a relationship - you can still be going through the same shit as always, but at least you can share your troubles with another person. Bleeding together is better than bleeding alone.

The line "I feel just like I could give it all" is probably the coolest thing Chris has ever sung.

Soundgarden – Beyond the Wheel Lyrics 14 years ago
The thing about the wheel being the oldest and most influential human invention seems like it fits into the song's meaning pretty well... It's saying that we've gone way far beyond the invention of the wheel, which helps people and makes everyday life more convenienct, to invent machines for killing each other.

"Between your house and home, there is a churning storm," means that the greed and intolerance that motivates humans into war is somewhere between necessity and selfishness. The churning storm is war, and the "house", or shelter, is what we need to survive. People will claim they are going to war out of necessity, when really their actions are closer to the "home", or comfort zone, inside their mind that motivates them to commit evil actions just to satisfy their sadistic desires.

"Of hailing burning bones," reminds you that this storm is arbitrarily chewing up human bones.

The tiny crying baby is the still innocent child being born into this world of war. "Little tiny pawn" means that he will eventually be used as a mindless warrior just like the generation before him.

"In the profit gain, tiny baby grows," means that, as the perpetual fighting rages on, the child is brainwashed by the war mentality and "grows" into a soldier himself.

"Mother, who's your man?" is the kid asking his mother if his dad is a fighter like he's supposed to be. "Is he doing what he can to make a proper home by overturning other stones?" means that, by uprooting others' ways of life, or overturning their stones and killing them like ants, the fighter is in effect making "a proper home" possible for his family and country.

"Father, mighty man..." shows that this kid, who represents society in general, looks up to the fighter and glorifies him as a hero. "...Loves his little boys, shows them how to kill..." means that the father teaches the kids to think like him, and sees this as being a loving father. "...To save his precious stones," is saying that we are overturning other people's stones and killing them to protect ourselves from having our own stones overturned.

"Far beyond the wheel, it steers your life around," is now ironically using the wheel as a metaphor for all the inventions of war, and saying that this "wheel" is steering everybody's lives whether they like it or not.

"We're driving flesh and blood straight into the ground," says that this car we're driving with the wheel is not just an inanimate object; it's human life, and also that this machine of war is only going to crash us all into the ground together.

Nirvana – Old Age (Box Set) Lyrics 14 years ago
i think its about knowing your times almost up, and knowing you havent accomplished everything you wanted to. being guilty and disappointed with yourself, looking back at what you see as a wasted life, and knowing youll make the most of your last days.

this is technically a really crappy demo, its bad sound quality and his voice definitely isnt the best...but theres something so pure and sincere about it that makes it better than almost any song on nevermind, maybe better than any song they ever released officially... my band is working on a cover of it, and hole does a very good version, but nothing matches this original, and i have a feeling that if they tried to do a good studio version of it, it wouldnt come out quite as perfect. some songs are just meant to be listened to through a haze of bad recording equipment and mumbling.

Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics 14 years ago
i think chris said its about acid, but that could mean it was INSPIRED by acid rather than all about it... to me its about the apocalypse, just like "black hole sun", except this has way more religious themes whereas "black hole sun" is more about just waiting for the end.

its an incredibly sad song to me, with its heaviness and the lyrics... its also extremely creepy, especially when the backing vocals come in. my favorite part is in the very beginning, theres this noise that must be a guitar pick scraping or something, and it sounds like a dog barking. the whole thing has such an atmosphere, its amazing.

Soundgarden – Big Dumb Sex Lyrics 14 years ago
me and my friend used to sing this all the time in school, and we had it so amazingly coordinated that teachers would even laugh their asses off at it... i would say one "fuck", he would say the next, then we would harmonize for the last "fuck you". soundgarden is best when experienced with good friends.

and i love that soundgarden can have such a sense of humor, a lot of people probably assume theyre this totally serious "grunge band" because most of their lyrics are about depression and isolation...louder than love has gotta be one of the funniest albums i own, with this, "power trip", "full on kevins mom", and then the reprise of "full on kevins mom". so perfect.

Soundgarden – Fresh Tendrils Lyrics 14 years ago
i think theres some drug elements in it but i agree with the parent/child interpretation, on account of the title... i always thought of the "shame shame throw yourself away" line as something a parent or teacher would say to a kid. and for some reason this song really, really reminds me of the show malcolm in the middle, if thats relevant to anyone.

Nirvana – Talk to Me Lyrics 14 years ago
awesome song...definitely has a different sound than their other work. i thought at first it was a joke or a parody of fun, carefree-sounding rock music because its so upbeat, but i dont know... even in their joke songs kurt seemed to have some meaningful lyrics worked in. either way its very cool, i love the part just before the chorus. i honestly couldnt understand a word besides "talk to me in your own language please" until i read this site though, and usually im good with deciphering kurts mumbling.

Temple of the Dog – Wooden Jesus Lyrics 14 years ago
ive always seen it as being about how religion can be corrupted by money and materialism. hes using wooden crucifixes and statues of the virgin mary as symbols of the commercialization of christianity, as well as calling certain peoples faith fake, by saying their jesus is wooden and their halo is made out of a coathanger. im a pretty devoted christian and i agree with the message of the song, how religion or any other sacred thing can be perverted by people who just want to make money or gain power from it. chris cornell rejects organized religion in a lot of his songs, but it doesnt seem like he has a hatred for religion in general--he defends christianity from people who twist it for their own benefits in "jesus christ pose" as well.

Temple of the Dog – Pushin' Forward Back Lyrics 14 years ago
i see this as the ultimate slacker song, its just about procrastinating and putting off life to chill out and do drugs, and the guy in the song, whether its chris cornell or andrew wood or whoever, is pushing everybody he loves away from him through this lifestyle. "pushing forward back" just means putting everything off til tomorrow, forgetting his goals and just letting go

Soundgarden – Holy Water Lyrics 14 years ago
i love soundgarden and this is a truly great song, but i have to say i really dont like his attitude toward religion. i think the song is basically mocking God and religion in general, and saying that religion, at least organized religion, restricts your life. other than the message i think this is a perfect song on an album of all perfect songs

Hole – Rock Star (Alternate Version) Lyrics 14 years ago
i think its the same concept as "school" by nirvana, i think she was inspired by a lot of kurts songs. its not a literal school, its just the music scene she belongs to where you have to look and play like everyone else or they wont accept you. in "school" kurt says "youre in high school again", its like hes saying he just got out of high school where no one accepted him and now its exactly the same even though hes a rock star. and thats what courtneys saying in this song i think

Hole – Playing Your Song Lyrics 14 years ago
courtney said she didnt want to make the "widow album" but i honestly think most if not all songs on celebrity skin are tied to kurt in some way. this one seems to be the most obvious. i think shes yelling at kurt in the first chorus for forcing her to go through his death, saying she had to tell the world he was dead and live with all the murder theories (which i actually believe are pretty valid) and nirvana fans criticizing her. then shes talking about how she has to hear kurts songs being played on the radio all the time, and other bands copying his style

Hole – Petals Lyrics 14 years ago
i think its about how she sees the world as stripping you of your innocence. she used "tear the petals off of you" as a metaphor for rape in the song "asking for it", it just means taking away somebodys purity. i think shes talking about her daughter frances, how shes just a kid and shes too innocent for this world, and shes afraid to let her grow up because she'll have to go through the same things she went through herself. thats how i see it

Nirvana – Verse Chorus Verse (Box-Set) Lyrics 14 years ago
to me its just about modern society, politics, religion, whatever. neither side is sacred, as in the two-party system in america and how both sides are equally evil. "taking medication til our stomachs full" is about the people who need medication for everything. it could be about a girl too, or maybe drugs, that keeps him from going insane in this world... she or it is the fog that keeps him clear. sounds a lot like its about courtney but i dont know when he wrote this so i could be wrong

to me its just about that horrible feeling of wasting time. watching others make something of their lives while youre just waiting for something to happen to you. he feels like he closes his eyes to blink or go to sleep and a thousand years pass before he opens them. i think its all just a metaphor for wasted time and regret for not making more of your life.

Alice in Chains – Brush Away Lyrics 14 years ago
its about how laynes addiction and general lifestyle has affected his life and made him into a joke to the people around him, and also how his fans idolize him and make him into some kind of cliched rock god stereotype. hes trying to get away from this tortured celebrity junkie image that his fans and friends and bandmates have of him, but in the end he knows its never gonna leave him. its just about people wrongly judging him really.

this is a surprisingly good song... its got some hard rock parts but it sounds more mature than their older stuff. i just hope billy can still scream like he did on their old stuff. and was anybody else reminded of "i am one", the first song on their first album, when he says "i am one of many more to come"?

Nirvana – Polly Lyrics 14 years ago
i dont think this song has anything to do with polly klaas. she got kidnapped from a slumber party and eventually killed. the song is based on another true story where a girl got kidnapped from a rock concert (not a nirvana one) and tortured and raped. she eventually gained the guys trust and escaped. i dont know if her name was actually polly or if kurt just called her that in the song to make it sound like she was the rapists pet bird (because he kept her in a cage). after this song came out another girl was raped by two guys who played the song while they raped her. kurt was pissed off that he actually had fans who were rapists.

Alice in Chains – Angry Chair Lyrics 14 years ago
its about laynes heroin addiction, using the whole childhood "angry chair" punishment thing as a metaphor. he misbehaved by doing heroin in the first place, now hes sitting on his chair paying the price. the electric chair interpretation also makes sense, because hes just sitting on the chair of addiction waiting to die basically. so you are all right.

Alice in Chains – A Looking in View Lyrics 14 years ago
i love the "lay down" line, its so powerful and it sounds just like vintage alice in chains. most of the song has that amazing early-90s feel that i havent heard at all since the turn of the century, and i was so happy when i first heard this and it gave off the same atmosphere as their last album. it goes on for a little too long though, so i hope the rest of the songs on the new album can be of the same quality but shorter. also the music video in my opinion is shit, it doesnt really capture the grungy atmosphere of the song and it reminds me of something a post-grunge band would do. i hope they go back to making those grainy surreal videos like "would" and "we die young". but other than that amazing song, and i cant really interpret any meaning because in my mind all their new songs are going to be about layne

honestly i think its about marijuana..."the dilly dally of my bright lit stay has given me the power to be afraid" and a bunch of other lines are about how, when hes sober, he has so much stress and frustration and depression and everything else you feel in your life, but when hes high hes "without a care in this whole world". i cant stand when people interpret every song to be about drugs, but this one probably is. i think the name porcelina is pretty cool if its describing a bowl, when youre personifying marijuana as a woman the obvious name would be "mary jane". billy corgans lyrics are pretty impressive whether hes writing about weed or not
