Elliott Smith – All Cleaned Out Lyrics 17 years ago
also, I hear "sorry you seem so stung" instead of stumped, again because of the rhyme, and because of the stronger emotional implications.

Elliott Smith – All Cleaned Out Lyrics 17 years ago
pretty sure it's "there aint nothing to drink" not dream, not only because it rhymes but because...well, hello

fucking so happy to have this song now. a lot of "new moon" was newly remastered versions of muffled-sounding demos i had collected (which was great!), but this one was totally new to me, and i love it!

Blonde Redhead – Chi É e Non É Lyrics 17 years ago
also clearly the title means roughly "this is not" - so possible connection to that song? (My apologies to anyone here who actually does know Italian, for my ignorance)

Blonde Redhead – Chi É e Non É Lyrics 17 years ago
hahaha online translators... this is what I got:

you know not six as me always you know where six as you know how much you want dì those that you want but I instead I do not want to wake up me in order to think you man boy passion of the game the fire the pit the roads covered of every night evening day this evening not to wake up me in order to speak with you to want to be who is not and it is not does not know the pleasure does not know of knowing does not know who to love you know kind six always six as you want when you know where six dì those that you want but I instead I do not want to wake up me neither to think you the fury indifference of who is and emotion is not every action is daily fiction but I yes I do not want to wake up me and neither neither to think you to want to be who is not who is not does not know the pleasure does not know of knowing does not know who to love to want to be who is not and it is not

given the disjointed way they often write lyrics in english, this might not even be too far off..?

Blonde Redhead – This Is Not Lyrics 17 years ago
That is interesting, interaktiv - I had noticed the connection of "this is not a cure" but never thought about the rest.

This song is so great for so many reasons. Musically it's brilliant, of course, but the instrumentation is so cheesy you just have to love it. And the lyrics are great too.
"I heard someone say
The mind keeps wandering from desire to contempt
From contempt to desire
Never ever feeling bored. Cause we think we are free.
I think it's so pathetic. Don't you ?"
this is such good stuff.

Sleater-Kinney – Dance Song '97 Lyrics 17 years ago
I like your interpretation salvo.

I think they may have also called it "dance song 97" because they are using a few different prerecorded drum loops instead of an actual drum track.

This is one of my favourite SK songs ever. The entire opening part and music during the verses is so catchy. I find the chorus part a little annoying, but that is part of the appeal.

Sleater-Kinney – Heart Factory Lyrics 17 years ago
hahaha I like the "fucks me up" interpretation.

I read that Janet was drumming on an old space heater to get the metallic sound in this song.

Elliott Smith – In the Lost and Found (Honky Bach) Lyrics 17 years ago
I thought the line in son of sam was "long revered"... I too thought they might be the same line, but it's definitely "lonely" something in this one.

Sleater-Kinney – Prisstina Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes definitely a pretty straightforward meaning to this one... I'm just posting because I wonder if anyone knows the lyrics that aren't included in the book? There are some barely audible lines by Carrie during the chorus, and the guy who does keyboards also sings a part during the bridge that sounds like "she's drunk enough" or "she's drugged enough" (?!) though that is most likely not what he's singing... any thoughts?

Sigur Rós – Heysátan Lyrics 17 years ago
lol only in a foreign language could the line "and I slipped...fuck" be so well hidden in such a beautiful track.

Björk – Vökuró Lyrics 17 years ago
þ is a TH sound, not ph.
so is ð, only more like in "weather" whereas þ would be closer to the sound in "thick".
Icelandic is NOT easy...it has some of the most wacky grammatical rules ever.

Mogwai – 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong Lyrics 17 years ago
This is among my favourite Mogwai tracks of all time. A couple years back I travelled across Canada on a bus and this song reminds me of going through prairie land in springtime at 5 in the morning after a storm. Gorgeous.

Mogwai – Kids Will Be Skeletons Lyrics 17 years ago
I like that interpretation.
I enjoy this song; I find it to be the only flaw with the sarcastic title of the album, as it is the "happy"est tune here while the rest are all quite somber in their own ways.

submissions
Mogwai – Tuner Lyrics 17 years ago
It reminds me of missing someone really bad, late at night, in springtime.

Mogwai – Yes! I Am a Long Way from Home Lyrics 17 years ago
Bought Young Team several years ago shortly after moving off to school on my own, and instantly fell in love with Mogwai via this song.
I used to play it really loud in the mornings getting ready for class. People in rez weren't too fond of me.

PJ Harvey – Water Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm amazed no one got the religious references. I'm not trying to be snooty - it's just painfully obvious, not to mention that so much of PJ's early work is fraught with biblical references.
The lyrics imho come from the perspective of someone who has been taught religion for years and years but not entirely believed it ("Mary, what your man said" (ie. Jesus), and the defiant repetition of "prove it to me!") and in the end has a divine experience of her own. There is also a blatant reference to the legend of Icarus and Daedalus ("waxy wings melted down into the sea"). I think this is thrown in there because, as she is walking into the water to see what happens, she is remembering other stories she has been told and how miracles failed those characters.

Sonic Youth – Female Mechanic Now On Duty Lyrics 17 years ago
more sources of my info:

"It's worth mentioning," says Kim. "That the song, 'Female Mechanic on Duty' was inspired by 'Bitch' by that famous Lilith-type female singer, Meredith Brooks. It's an answer song." "I have a particular dislike for that song," says Steve.
(from http://www.sonicyouth.com/history/ographies/1000-lvs.html)

and:

"Not all of the album was recorded in Echo Canyon -- the second half of "Female Mechanic Now On Duty" actually comes straight from the "Sessions @ West 54th St." broadcast, with vocals overdubbed."

Funny enough, the book was recommended to me just a day or two before I got "Sonic Nurse" and I noticed the connection but didn't think much of it - now I am reading the book and can see it.
Also, is she actually saying something after "I don't know you/ I won't show you --"?? or is that just yeah-yeah gibberish?

also, the second half of the song is from a different recording session than the first half, though it is pieced together quite nicely. one of my favourites not only from 1000 Leaves but in general. Killer riffs you just wanna play LOUD.

also the name "equus" is simply the latin name for horse, not necessarily a reference to the play; although interesting

submissions
Blonde Redhead – Equus Lyrics 18 years ago
also, a few years before the release of "Misery...", Kazu suffered a broken leg after falling/being thrown off a horse. The album revisits the theme of being injured by an innocent creature and this, I feel, is the pinnacle of this concept.

submissions
Blonde Redhead – Falling Man Lyrics 18 years ago
ties in with the album's overall theme of being injured, as Kazu was when she was thrown off the horse -- with much deeper meanings attached, of course
