King's X – Lies In The Sand (The Ballad Of...) Lyrics 1 year ago
This song is about the contrast between bona-fide true-hearted preachers like Billy Graham ("his hands tremble as he points it out") and con artists like Michael Warnke ("the man who says he was a satanic beast"). The truths and the lies are all so convincing... which is which? Who is really speaking for God? Both? Neither?

@[gregorik:43833] According to the "King's X Oral History" book, the band claims that Ty wrote this before he got married.. it's literally a song about meeting a pretty girl and being tongue-tied, not knowing what to do.

Copeland – Choose the One Who Loves You More Lyrics 5 years ago
To understand this song:

Be married a few years
Have some fights, experience periods of unhappiness and regret
Start texting old lovers... wondering if perhaps you chose the wrong person to marry
Choose the one who loves you more

Copeland – In Her Arms You Will Never Starve Lyrics 5 years ago
Just discovered this song recently... wow... it is now my new ode to my wife of 20+ years... no matter how difficult the world can seem, we can still find a way to fall asleep in each other's arms. Her "ocean of kindness" has pulled me under, more times than I can count.

What a beautiful song.

Spitalfield – In The Same Lifetime Lyrics 7 years ago
This song makes me think of when I graduated college and got a job offer 1000 miles away... discussing with my girlfriend "what should I do?". And she said "go for it, it's a great opportunity, you can't pass it up, it's what you've been working so hard for"... even though it meant leaving her behind, while she finished school herself.

I took the job, making frequent trips back to see her, but each time, it became more and more obvious that the relationship was faltering. The verse about the summer-changed-to-fall-changed-to-winter implies the passage of time, and that their relationship issues are still unresolved.

Ultimately, the relationship ended, but we'll always be "together" in a sense....under the same sky.. in the same lifetime....

The Naked And Famous – Hearts Like Ours Lyrics 8 years ago
This is my favorite Naked and Famous song.

To me this song is about dealing with the anxiety and sadness of having unresolved plans/hopes/dreams.

The lines "There's a fear that won't subside, Of all the things I'll never do" refers to opportunities slipping away....

The lines "Half awake and almost there, Keeping empty beds elsewhere" immediately made me think of projects that I had started but never finished... things I really want to do but haven't yet given my full attention... projects I intend to return to someday, but haven't yet.

When I hear "We're yet to bleed, All the time and energy", it makes me think of those times when I really wanted something but just didn't try hard enough... I didn't "bleed the time and energy" that was required to make my dream come true.

Kings – This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide Lyrics 9 years ago
Is anyone here from Phoenix, AZ? I lived there during college, from 1984-1987. One of the rock stations in Phoenix (I think it was KDKB) would play this at 5pm every Friday afternoon... they had a voice-over by the Kings, in the interlude between halves of the song.... it was something like "Hi we're the Kings, and we're switching to glide for the weekend on 99.3, KDKB!" and then the 2nd half of the song would kick into gear. "Nothing matters but the weekend....". I loved it.

Brand New – The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows Lyrics 9 years ago
This song, to me, about going thru a divorce.

"The Quiet Things No One Ever Knows" refers to all the behind-the-scenes stuff that leads to a divorce.... outsiders say "he/she must've cheated" (reports of a lover's tryst) or "they had money problems", etc., but in truth only the two people involved really know what led to the breakup.

"Keep the blood in your head and keep your feet on the ground. Today's the day it gets tired. Today's the day we drop down" refers to the divorce finally becoming "official", Going public, now they can't hide their marital problems anymore, from friends, family, co-workers. Everyone will know, now! The couple is going to try to stay cool and calm, feet on the ground.

"Give up my body in bed. All for an empty hotel. Wasting words on lowercases and capitals" refers to the songwriter, leaving his home to go live in a hotel. He spends his time writing songs or letters, ie "wasting words". It seems to be an admission that -- if he had spent more time talking with his spouse instead of working (ie wasting words by writing songs), maybe the marriage would've worked.

"And though our kids are blessed, the parents let them shoulder all the blame" probably means that the kids are thinking it's their own fault... and the parents don't care, at the moment.

"I lie for only you. And I lie well. " refers to the Big Lie that the couple has agreed to tell everyone about why they got divorced.

Jimmy Eat World – For Me This Is Heaven Lyrics 15 years ago
When i hear this song, it makes me think of being old and alone, after my wife dies. I am 7 years older than she, but she is in poorer health and odds are pretty good she will go before me. :-(

The song puts me in this setting -- I am outside, looking up at the stars.... maybe one of them isn't really a star at all, but my wife looking down upon me? Time is so clumsy now, I'm careful but not sure how I make it thru each day. I often lose myself in whatever false courage I muster up for myself, on those days I feel like I am "getting over it"... only to have the big hand of Time come around again and remind me that I am still alone and weak.

I can still feel the butterflies of the day we first met.... I can still hear our last goodbye... and I still remember everything in between.

I close my eyes and believe, that wherever my Angel is... she can still feel the butterflies too, and hear that last "goodnight".

The time we had now ends.

Cheap Trick – Heaven Tonight Lyrics 15 years ago
Some of Cheap Trick's early songs had a definite suicide theme... "Oh Candy" and "Auf Wedersehen" to name two... I always considered that this song was about suicide, too. But I could go with the OD'ing on heroin idea, too.

Great song... one of the finest examples of 1970's pop-art-rock. I would love to see this done live, with a orchestra.. the same way Led Zep did with "Kashmir". It would also make an awesome soundtrack to some death scene in a movie.

Cool Hand Luke – This Is Love Lyrics 15 years ago
I heard this song for the first time today. Love the way the simple guitar riff plays off of the bass riff -- good stuff!

The lines "We fool ourselves for comfort" and "We trade in our patience, for false security" seem to refer to when people get into relationships just because it's convenient, or because they're afraid they can't find anyone "better". This song seems to be for people who are not sure what "real love" is -- and it accurately says Love is this: when you would gladly, in-a-second die for someone, no questions asked. If you don't have that feeling with the person in your relationship, it's not love... it's just a false security.

Mae – Anything Lyrics 16 years ago
Musically, this song is awesome. Love the violins and the chimes.

The line: "The pain, it won't even cross my mind, its a wonder in everything
The rope gets loose and the chains unbind, and I can do anything "

puts a picture in my mind of a handicapped person.. or perhaps someone who is dying of cancer. The song is how this person can "lose themselves" in a feeling of love or inspiration, and forget about how crappy his life/situation is. As others have said -- this is an exceedingly inspirational song.

Number One Gun – Celebrate Mistakes Lyrics 17 years ago

Copeland – You Have My Attention Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about remembering a loved one who has passed away. There are days, even years after the person has died, when suddenly they seem "alive" again in your memory. Almost like the person is trying to reach out to you from beyond the grave... you might sing a song or say a prayer, and hope that they really can hear you.

Keane – Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics 18 years ago
as a couple in love -- haven't you ever talked about where your spirits would meet after you die? that would be the "somewhere only we know". He's singing about reaching the end of his life, his "something to rely on" would be the promise they made to each other about where to meet.

Staind – Everything Changes Lyrics 18 years ago
once you've been married for a few years and broken your spouse's heart once or twice... then this song's true meaning will really jump out at you. I don't think you can appreciate this song fully unless you've been the one who has really hurt (or betrayed) someone you love.

System of a Down – Aerials Lyrics 18 years ago
This song uses a TV antenna as a metaphor... most people are content with floating down the river of life, just ending up where ever the water flows... seeking the path of least resistance. Some people aren't satisfied with what they're told is "truth", and put up an "aerial", to see if there's any wisdom/truth out there beyond every day experience. Those people who "pick up the signal" are become free.

Anberlin – Paperthin Hymn Lyrics 18 years ago
the "over and over" refrain refers to the thoughts of guilt and sadness that won't stop going thru the singer's head. "I thought you said forever".... "Who's gonna call on Sunday morning?"... "Who's gonna drive you home?"

"One sleepless night becomes bitter oblivion"
He was out on the road when a friend passed away, and he wasn't there to be at his/her side.

This song is really great. Can't stop listening to it

Billy Joel – All For Leyna Lyrics 18 years ago

Breaking Benjamin – Rain Lyrics 19 years ago
i think it's a song about being on the road as a rock star... and what a mixed blessing it is. "We are never sad because we are not allowed to be". It can be very depressing and melancholy to be on the road, away from loved ones for months at a time.

This is a breathtakingly beautiful song.

The Carpenters – Goodbye To Love Lyrics 19 years ago
This is my #1 favorite Carpenter's tune, and one of my favorite songs ever.

It is (was) famous for the fact that Richard and Karen over-dubbed more than 30 vocal tracks on the anthem-like fade-out (it was the most ever, at the time).

Very lushly produced.. beautifully sung by Karen... great lyrics... and a great 3 minute guitar solo on the fade-out at the end.

The line in the middle "there are no tomorrows for this heart of mine... something I could live for" are heart-wrenching. Karen could really put some emotion into her singing... too bad that, back then, they had to water everything down for radio. Love songs couldn't get "too serious".... I believe she could've sung songs that would have people killing themselves.... her voice was that good!

Bread – Diary Lyrics 19 years ago
While not my favorite Bread song (see "Everything I Own"), "Diary" is perhaps their saddest and most heart-breaking. Very simply arranged, with just an acoustic guitar with some violins setting the mood, and David Gates' angelic voice lamenting the discovery that his true love is actually in love with someone else. Don't listen to this song if you are depressed! ;-)

In the 1970's, the opening guitar riff ranked up there with Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" as a song every acoustic guitar player "MUST" know how to play.

submissions
Bread – Lost Without Your Love Lyrics 19 years ago
This is an under-appreciated Bread tune. The rockin' bridge with the ripping guitar solo distract from an otherwise beautiful and sad love song. David Gates sounds like an angel, god what a voice he has! This should've been on the first greatest hits album.

Bread – Just Like Yesterday Lyrics 19 years ago
Of all the Bread "filler" material, this is definitely my favorite song. The bridge gets a little jumbled, but the beautifully orchestrated beginning and ending of the song are among the best of Bread's output. James Griffin's voice fits well with the music and I think he was the right choice to sing this one.

Bread – Everything I Own Lyrics 19 years ago
My mom brought home this record (the "Baby I'm A Want You" album) in 1973, when I was only 7 years old. I listened to this song over and over again. I remember my mom having to tell me, repeatedly, to go outside and play instead of listening to her records. This song has been the most influential and important in my entire life. I still listen to it frequently.

My understanding is that this song is about David Gates' father, not grandfather. Whatever the inspiration, he truly captured lightning in a bottle - this song is a masterpiece.

My wife still tells me she's gonna have this played at my funeral ;-)

Chevelle – The Clincher Lyrics 19 years ago
i heard the song for the first time on the radio yesterday... obviously i couldn't make out all the words, but even then a vision flashed through me of being at the cross, nailing down Jesus and watching him die.... and then at some point realizing "oh shit, maybe this guy really was the Son of God". the words "if we had known, never would i, help to nail down" immediately brought that scene into my head, even though I couldn't make out most of the other words.

i don't know or care if these guys are a "Christian band" or not... their lyrics are awesome and their music rocks. the singing is incredible, i feel like i can hear his very soul crying out. i wish I could sing like that!

i can't wait for another studio album.

Story of the Year – Sidewalks Lyrics 19 years ago
this song really resonates within me. I grew up in a really small town. As a child, I too sat on my front porch and watched cars go by, counting trucks, cars, etc. I understand exactly what the lyrics are describing... "memories shaken apart".

Later on in life, I had the opportunity to go back to live in my hometown, where all my childhood memories are. Like the song says, things look so different, years later. You remember all the hopes and dreams you had, and how you couldn't wait to get out of that small town and take on the world. Now, as an adult, you feel a lot of longing for the good old days. But, "all of the days have passed us by, all of the sun has gone away".

King's X – Complain Lyrics 19 years ago
each member of the band has publicly abandoned organized religion... which is not the same as "abandoned Christianity". You can find recent interviews that clearly indicate that each band member is still quite dedicated to their own personal belief in God.... but I doubt any one of them ever sets foot in a church anymore.

Disturbed – Prayer Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, this song is the singer's prayer to be freed from the crap of everyday life. "Burn me alive inside" strikes me as a loose reference to the verses in the Bible where the apostle Paul talks about having your works judged by God -- the things that were good and worthwhile will pass thru the fire as "gold"; the worthless things will burn up into ashes. The singer wants all the crap in his life burned up.. he wants everything useless, painful, and evil taken away, out of his heart.

Chevelle – Grab Thy Hand Lyrics 19 years ago

King's X – Out of the Silent Planet Lyrics 19 years ago
This is one of my favorite King's X tunes. It rocks, has cool lyrics, and the "wall of sound" vocals will make you say "wow, I've never heard anything like that before!".

"out of the silent planet" was a book by C.S. Lewis, about a man named Ransom who was sent from Earth (the so-called "silent planet") to another planet to save it from evil, which had escaped the Earth without permission from the Master of the Universe.

King's X – The Burning Down Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about feeling far away from God.

Another neat aspect to the song - listen to the guitar swells on the fade-out. After a few minutes, you'll hear "Jesus Loves Me, This I Know".
