I agree somewhat with the 1st commentator. It sounds to me like there's a struggle to repress an alter-ego. The "basement" is repression. What escapes is the alter-ego, or "replacement." After which, the subject is waiting on the opportunity (an open space) to beat the escapee back into submission. In doing so, the subject is distancing himself from "the rest." I suppose his alter-ego is similar in character to his peers.
The "wishing well" part is a play on words, I feel. Either an actual wishing well or the sentiment of wishing someone well on their departure. "..that won't confess to.." Wishing wells hold secrets by withholding silent wishes through coin tosses, whereas the sentiment of wishing someone well may hold a secret if it's not intended in some way. Maybe the subject of the song is secretly wishing to be like the rest, yet knows that if he tries to he'd be losing himself. He stops becoming like them, hesitantly pushing them away (wishing them well).
I think the "effortless" part is supposed to be ironical. The cycle is easier said than done. In the end, I'd say the guy is doing the right thing. Stay yourself, though it's difficult at times. |

Yeah, like someone said, there are sexual undertones but the meaning is deeper than that.
Seems the guy was wanting to finally find a girl that understands his pain. He found one who's comforting words to his pain are "please don't worry." They fall in love and soon think of marriage, but the guy's issues may run pretty deep because she's fearful of instability. Waiting for wings, with clouds and storm, to fly upon, is analogous to a steady love without inevitable turbulence. He says "I will" be your safety and asks her to bear with him ("please lie still"). He tells her that her faith in him means everything to him.
His embrace is moving, but the issues still cause doubt (she can't give him an answer). This must go on for a little while because of the year coming to a close.
He isn't perfect but his love is strong enough for him to be strong for her, and wait anxiously for her to feel safe with him. The love is there and it's wanting to bloom ("so unsure until tonight"..."today is our whole life"), but fear makes her unsure and "count up the cost" and consequences of marrying before they're ready. She cares. She says "there is no hurry." The song sounds surreal and sad all at once. |

I agree, Denizaahere. It seems like there's stressful things going on in this song and the singer is aware of being caught up in the drama. That he suggests to slow down and think of scenery says something. It's as if he's saying the world could be overrun amok with chaos, but being with his sweetheart brings a lighter perspective to it all. For him, dark blue may symbolize gratefulness in spite of conflict. Basically it's a love song. |

My guess is the singer's friend is dealing with something on their own and it's becoming caustic. It's not clear what exactly is transpiring, but it's safe to say it's beyond anyone's immediate control. I know it hurts seeing someone you care for change from the inside out. Like they don't remember anything.. Whatever is troubling his friend is bordering on emotionally traumatic for him.
So it's a bitter pill for the both of them. The singer is despairing and his friend is heavy-hearted/headed even as things quiet down a little (wear off), that is, until the "medicine" is forced once more. |

I concur, FOA. It's as if, maybe, all she can seem to turn into is herself. She wants to turn into someone like her lover/friend. It stands to reason that she could have been referring to herself when she said "she'll turn into..." She keeps silently wishing she could change and, like you said, be more open and let said person in like he/she does her.
The "I know what I know" stanza is like a perfect circle. She knows what she always "knows" and that's why she can't escape turning into herself all the time. So she'll "turn into the only thing thing that ever known. Only thing that ever knows."
Altogether this song explains "how far she is to keep him out." What she wants to tell her lover/friend all about. |

I guess it's about the singer's girlfriend or something. She gets upset to the point of envy about a situation between the singer and her friends. Blames them all for something she's blowing out of proportion. She's acting like she "knows everything" about this problem that's upsetting her. Thinking he's flirting or who knows what. Her friends and him are seeing how ridiculous she's acting. Too cool to listen to reason.

ok, I do think this song has to do with suicide. I think the writer's friend's courage was confused because he didn't know what he was really up against when he was being reckless with whatever killed him. Drugs, I'm thinking (his arrows struck him in. they said he'd never use). Maybe the second verse was his friend's old jokes about the matter of endangering himself. idk But the chorus sounds like the writer's bitter. I gave it a shot... Catchy song. Even sounds deep, so I hope it is. |

I feel this song is more of a guilt trip. The thoughts possibly in the back of a man's mind who gave up everything (e.g. his gal and son) to pursue a rock star career. "Have you told her son" is almost reflecting on how he gave them up. He's not your son anymore because you bought and sold your loved ones for this dream of yours. The title may even mean the games are over, now it's time to own up to your ill decisions. The Forecast is a real rock band, in its own right. I love them too |

Okay, songmeanings135 has got it, I believe. He/she made me take another look at the jeans reference. Clever double-meaning. The disease would make so much since. Hey, do you think the chorus is about him hesitating to end his own life? The way I see it, that needle would either help him or hurt him, so it would only make sense to me if he were trying to end it all. The second stanza, I think, is him complaining. He wants to have what others have (but he can't cuz he's too sick) and then he wants a knife and a gun so he can vent out his frustrations (probably on himself) and, like the above user said, his parents would not allow or supply that method. This song is crazy deep. |
