Couple of things: I'm pretty sure the words are not "homeless trees" but "hopeless strays". But that's just me being pedantic seeing as I don't know what it means either way.
Also, a lyrics site I found claimed that the lines about "paper wings" were in fact "paper weights"! I spose it's not out of the question for Karl Hyde to visualise paperweights in the wind dangling, but it still seemed like an odd suggestion.
