it sounds like he's visiting someone he used to know, and seeing her is like being in prison. It's driving him nuts, and he doesn't know why he even bothered going there to begin with.
This girl is obviously something else - he says she's stronger than "lesser girls" and she's the best thing "to come out of this place".
He wants her to know how wierd it is for him, because he longs for her so much. He wants her to "leave out the others" and settle for him.
I think maybe there was a falling out, or worse. She owes him money, they exchange letters.... or something to that affect.
