I think that the "pieces of heaven" actually refers to the "angel" she bought. i think what they were selling on tv was actually this whole idea that to fit in in society, you have to have certain things...
"And I saw it on tv
They were selling pieces of heaven
And I thought, hey what about me?
When am I considered?"
which by the way should read, "cause i saw it on tv"
i think this song is about doing something for the wrong reasons. To me, personally, it's about dating someone not because you have feelings for them but some other (for example, to be cool or fit in).
"I chained my angel to the eavestrough
It was November and I think I pissed him off "
I think this means that she actually had no use for her "angel" so she left him outside because she doesnt know what she's supposed to do with him, hence the part: "Come and sing me a song or two, Whatever it is you angels do "; she only bought him because everyone else was doing the same thing, so she doesnt know what his purpose is.
I can relate to this song because i almost dated a guy who had like a "bad boy image" just to piss my parents off. But when we were alone, I couldn't deal because we had so little in common. This song just shows how shallow even good people can be.
