it's interesting way to look at it. and if this song do have double meaning that they are very wise! if it's true i think that these lines mean:"I try to hide it but my eyes reflect the pain No happy endings here for you and I" that they kept Steps as long as they could but they couldn't "suffer" it anymore eventually, they couldn't hide it anymore.
