At first I really thought that it was just a simple song about how you feel when you mistakingly kill a pet (I know the feeling). It reminds me of the movie Jack. On a personal note, I listened to it after I broke up with my boyfriend and it took on a whole new meaning. The butterfly is obviously a girlfriend. He thinks that the relationship is wonderful until he has a reality check and realizes that by loving his interest he has smothered her. Maybe he did something without thinking of how she would feel because he sees her as a perfect entity and ended up hurting her. Now he feels bad because he didnt do it on purpose. His guilty feelings don't go away quickly because there is always something present to remind him of his mistakes. Then he comes to terms with the fact that this girl is wonderful, however just as fragile as anyone else.
