This song is most certainly about acid. It says it quite clearly "Such a long, strange trip it's been", "Chasing colors to the sun". "The lunatic never falls", basically means that when you're tripping, you feel invincible. You'll do anything without fear. When Warrel wrote, "Why should I come down? from here, I can see forever," he probably meant that he found an escape and excitement in his trips. "So I sing this song for the lost one" could mean that he was aware of people who, indeed, never "came down." Very cool song. Definitely one to play while dropping acid ! ;)
