The song on the whole is obviously a song about loss, not necessarily romantic, but the lyrics are general enough that anybody that you love, be it family, friends, etc, can relate. In my case, it resonates a lot with the loss of my girlfriend, now ex, of 3.5 years. Despite the issues we faced, there was a lot of corrective action and effort on my part to make it work, maybe too late, but thats what I resonate with the most in this song, when Collins sings
"like morning dreams they just disappear
like dust in your hand falling to the floor
how can life ever be the same",
and I think with any type of heartbreak, life really never is the same. It will be different, it has to be. I think especially when the heartbreak is unexpected, it amazes the person how many things you subconsciously plan are no longer possible. Like that, the next morning, you wake up you realize that you will never see those things come to fruition. It is a VERY bitter pill to swallow.
