Play In Time Lyrics

"Blues were my favorite colour, til I looked around and found another song that I felt like singing."

These lyrics seem to me that Anderson is speaking about the split between himself and the other founder of the band, guitarist Mick Abrahams, who just died shortly before Christmas 2025 (I'm writing this in February 2026). After the band released their debut album, "This Was," in 1968, Anderson wanted to take the group in a more experimental direction (including madrigals, English folk traditions, etc., eventually ending up in what is now known as prog rock), while Abrahams wanted to continue playing blues-based rock and roll. Anderson won out and Abrahams quit the band, then formed Blodwyn Pig, which had two successful albums in 1969 and 1970, with a more straight-ahead blues sound (with brass instruments added) that Tull was pursuing. "Blues was my favorite color 'til I found another song that I felt like singing" seems to be Anderson's way of saying that he didn't want to be limited to the bluesy format Abrahams favored.
