The fact that the protagonists gives so much thoughts about losing something platonic and starting to get physical affection, might be not a serenade to a particular female, but also an elegy to innocent youth and the fact that he can no longer percieve his female peers (friends, schoolmates) as friends, because puberty had hit and he is questioning himself his own feeling about them.
