I hear the lyrics different than what the website here quoted. "Crawl on you knees in the fire" sounds like someone depressed and just can't get himself up out of a bad situation, "Calling the backseat a friend" - He is not in control; he's safe in the backseat ,not driving. "Like a kite" - He is tethered and blowing around with the wind, again not free to control his life. But it's "all in your mind"; the growing trees represent the life he could have if he broke out of this depression. Jack Milas is a wonderful poet, hard to understand but the chord structure of this song makes it beautiful.
