As for the theme I'm getting 'sneak thief' vibes here, perhaps the protagonist is desparate or has an addiction. Anyway if people in that situation resort to theft they tend to betray those closest to them - friends, family etc.
It sounds like he's caught in the act at some stage and starts reeling off his catalogue of excuses as to why he did it.
