So im here from the future. After reading decades of people arguing about the band itself, I'm here to tell you my meaning of this song.

I have watched the music video and read carefully the lyrics.

First, the music video shows a man with dilated pupils, being stressed or being completely cooked, super high. The very first time I watched the video, I thought the guy was on coke. Splashes water on his face to cool down. Stares in front oh him.

Then the duality with the two persons in the video. One tries to escape the other. The shirt color is darker for the chaser.

They face each other. In the lyrics at that monent, one tries reaching out for help, tries to hold a hand that is not there. A despair call for God's help, which doesn't come.

But when they face each other, we see they are actually the same red: it is the same person. In the end, the chaser helps the other. There is a sorta time loop where "that's what we should have done". Realizing the solution was not asking for God's help, but accepting oneselft.

There are a few videos where the band talks about why they stopped being Christains. Spencer himself said God didn't help him. That he was disappointed of the Christians because he found better help from other, non religious, F-ed up people. The video there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lCN3fgwibM, named "Underoath - Underoath's Three Thoughts on Christianity"

So yeah, perhaps I'm wrong. But in any case that's an interesting angle to try for the meaning of this song.
