the song always reminded me of the novel “Solaris” by Stanislaw Lem. the story follows Kris Kelvin who after a trip from earth goes to a planet Solaris. similarly with the lyrics talking about a shuttle crashing to another planet. in the story the planet is surrounded by a large ocean that’s considered a large bio mass. the entirety of it being a brain. the ocean causing them (the characters in the story) to see people from their past. Relating to the lyrics the character Dr Snow calls them “visitors.” the lyric “he’d seen plenty of mirages and imaginary visitors up until then” draws the connection for me that the story is inspired by Solaris. as for the meaning in itself it’s almost a retelling of the story with a different spin of a man who crash lands onto a different planet who is plagued by memories of his past and loved ones who eventually takes his life by drowning himself in a lake.
