Cover art for John Wayne lyrics by Cigarettes After Sex

I feel like this song is about the idealization we sometimes have with “almost something” relationships, kind of like a platonic love. Watching someone, being interested, liking that person, but something inside holds you back. In the end, you don’t express yourself and never take the step to say what you feel. But this John Wayne seemed to have a darker side.

In short: don’t be like John Wayne. Confess, fight, and work on yourself, so you can love and be loved, if you truly believe that person is the one.
