This is not so much a meaning as John could not foresee the future, but it is sadly prophetic. John was an amateur leisure pilot. He loved to fly just "for the freedom I feel when I fly". He was the hawk as he flew to join the eagle above the mountains. "Blood on my feathers" was, sadly, his own blood when he died in the crash of his plane.
