To me, I always sort of interpreted this song as about a guy who once had a girlfriend and they both really got each other and coped with their pain together. “The dark scares me so…We’re nothing apart…Let’s stay friends forever.”
For the verses the guy is almost in doubt that the girl has moved on from him and is pretty much desperate for her to trust him that things will be okay eventually if they stay together. Then when the chorus comes, he gets hit with the sad reality and somewhat acceptance, and the grief of losing her, along with the everlasting fear of what’s to come. And he wonders if he’ll ever find someone like that again.
Anyway, I think this really is a beautiful and heartbreaking song about the grief of breaking up with someone and begging for them to come back, though you know deep down that it’s genuinely over (not to mention that this is the final track on the album). It almost gives me the chills, and the symbolism of “facing the rain” perfectly captures the song.
