If you even try in the smallest of ways to understand the struggle and resolution of that struggle from verse one to last verse it's all very simplistic not all that complicated. The protagonist wants meaning for his existence. He can dabble in the industries who claim to provide it but they show themselves to be unworthy of the trust. He is left as so many are the only thing I can truly rely on is to my own self be true. I take exception with common interpretation of one line I definitely hear it clear as day...
