A lot of interesting interpretations here. If I remember correctly and I believe I do, Martin wrote this song about becoming/being a father to a newborn. I read an article about this a very very very long time ago, possibly late 90s. It makes sense since his first daughter was born in 1991, around that time he must have been writing songs for SOFAD.
